Cannabis leaf discoloration *helped
    #21879989 - 06/30/15 08:18 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hello. This is my first time growing cannabis and I'm really enjoying it so far. I have 9 seedlings in 1 quart pots of happy frog soil. They've been under a 1200w LED (550w true) for about 1 week now. I kept 1 separate under fluorescents as a control. The LED plants have exploded in growth and are noticeably bushier than the one under fluoro's. Temps have been around 86F, sometimes up to 90 for a bit during the first few days. I saw some signs of heat stress but have raised the light a bit and they seem to be settling in. Today however, I started to notice speckles on some of the leaves. Also the first set of true leaves have some spots between the veins which I think is related to the heat stress.

Almost all the LED plants are showing spotting on first leaves, slight yellowing around edges, and light speckling + dark spots on newer leaves. The control plant isn't showing any of those symptoms.

I've looked at the picture guides for common cannabis problems and couldn't quite pin the cause. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

looks to me like early stage nitrogen deficiency. The veins are still dark green, in between is lightening. Maybe a slight phosphorus issue as well.

Anyone else?

Looks like maybe magnesium or phosphorus deff.
Also your soil looks pretty dry, and there is definitely signs of heat stress in those pics.

Good luck!

Thanks for the quick replies! I reviewed those deficiencies and will take them into consideration. I'm going to raise the light even more because I think these deficiencies could just be side effects of too much light + heat stress. The top half inch of soil is definitely dry but I just watered them yesterday and below is quite moist yet. I'll keep a close eye on them the next few days and update with progress.

Oh, I also haven't been testing my PH, do you think it could be a PH problem? I noticed some similarities in the research I just did. I've been watering them with tap water and this house has a water softener so they may be getting extra salty. I have a soil PH meter and will update once I know more about that too.

It would be nice to know what your water pH is and what nutrients you're using yes.

I wish I knew :frown: Can't afford the bottles to calibrate my pH pen. And my soil pH meter doesn't seem to be reading, or the soil pH is exactly the same as the meter's default - 7.0. I'm not feeding them any nutrients yet, but they've been in 1 quart Fox Farm Happy Frog soil for about 2 weeks now.

Here's how one of them look this morning :frown: the blotches have gotten larger and darker, in the middle of the 2nd set of true leaves. The serrated edges also have darkness.

Is there nutrients in that soil? You should absolutely be feeding by now. Most growers I know including myself start feeding as soon as the first set of true leaves shows up.

Just called them up and the rep said Happy Frog potting soil does have nutrients in it to last 2-3 weeks, then I'd want to start a feeding schedule. So I guess they could be getting hungry now with how hard the light is working them.

Ok, thank you again for your help and recommendations! I'll scrap some cash for nutes and pH balancing. Do you use those advanced nutrients in hydro or soil? Or does it not matter? And which should I use for vegetation, both iguana juice and mother earth tea?

that's a phosphorus deficiency. It can be fixed real easy. Use quarter to half strength of recommended dose on bottle. You do not want to burn them worse.

Look for new growth to be healthy and green. Older growth will stay damaged.

Get your ph to 6.2,  and don't over do the nutrients / food,  it will do more harm than good... Are you gonna be using pots/ soil,  ir hydro?

Mother Earth tea and iguana juice both come in vegetative and flowering formula. I think I prefer iguana juice but the Mother Earth is more common and slightly cheaper. They are both %100 organic and have a "pH perfect" guarantee so no matter your water source the pH will come out to around 6.0 after you add the nutrients. Means you don't need any pH testing equipment! It works with soil/soilless and hydro.

The company is called Advanced Nutrients and they're my favourite hands down.

Also I have up to tripled the nutrient dose when using organics and never seen any nute burn. By week 2 im typically feeding full strength. Ready to flower at week 4-5 from seed. I'll never ever ever never again use synthetic nutrients after switching to organic.

Thanks! I've heard the bottle recommendations can be overpowering. Definitely going to start quarter strength and work up.

Ok, good tip, thanks! And I'm using happy frog potting soil. I'll work on lowering the pH.

Sweet! That sounds completely amazing to flower at 5 weeks. Prob going to get the iguana juice, looks like my local shop is sold out of mother earth tea.

Good job team! I watered them with 3ml / liter of the iguana juice last night and I could already see noticeable improvement today. The discoloring has stopped and has faded some, looking a lot less nasty than before. The new growth is pretty small still but looks healthy.

I have another question though. I watered them about 24 hours ago and now they look a little thirsty already again. Should I use the nutrients every time I water, even if that is every day?

I picked up the pots and they do feel much lighter than when I set them down last night. The plants are on their 6th node I think, and I have them in 1 quart pots. I noticed a few days ago that roots were already showing through the bottom holes of all the pots. Does this sound like a good time to transplant to a bigger pots?

If so, what would size pot would you recommend? My strain supposedly takes about 90 days to harvest and will be 3 feet tall so from what I've researched that's kind of between the 3 gal and 5 gal pot sizes. Another consideration is my space is 3x3 feet, how many plants should I do in 9 sq. ft.? It's actually 8 sqft because one corner square foot is taken up by a tower fan. I have 9 plants in the space now, but I'm not sure if I could fit nine 5-gal pots in there. So a few options I've been thinking of is maybe the 4 best plants in 5-gal pots, or 8 plants in 3-gal pots, 1 per sq. ft. But I'd really like some advice.

Dude, I got ph 7 solution. Just shoot me a message and I'll send you some. You only need very little for a calibration.

Iguana juice FTW !!

I watered with that exact nutrient 2/3 waterings irregardless of whether or not I watered every day.
So my schedule essentially was: nutrients, nutrients, water. nutrients, nutrients, water. Repeat.
And I was watering everyday. Also I was using 4-6ml per litre. But work your way up and watch how the plants respond, don't go from 3ml nutrient to 6ml in one day lol.

In flowering it was common to feed with triple what the bottle says. I've done 3 high powered indoor grows with iguana juice and never once got nutrient toxicity from over feeding, which I did often hahaha!

As for pot size general rule is 1 gallon for every month the plant has been alive.
1 month old = 1 gallon pot
3 month old = 3 gallon pot
