Efficiency tips for packing straw logs?
    #21879511 - 06/30/15 06:35 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I just spent 45 minutes packing one 60 inch (5 ft) log. I had no idea this part of the process would be so time consuming. I need a table where I can lay my straw and spawn. Right now I'm just holding the poly tube in my hand, bending over to grab a handful of straw, then standing up to get a clump of spawn. And each one of those layers only adds 1.5 to 2 inches when compressed. So I do that 20-30 times.

Any tips?

You can mix the spawn and straw on a table instead of layering. To speed up packing you can build a ring or funnel that holds the bag open as you stuff it. Ive seen a video where the end of the spawn table has a hole in it and a collar to put the bag on. But there was a second person holding the bags on the collar as they were packed. You could try different methods of holding the bag to the collar maybe a bungee cord?

I just wiegh the amount of straw and spawn that I want separately then mix them all together in a big tote. Then stuff the log. Saves a lot of time. Also colonized a little faster and more evenly, IMO.
