Garden pictures again
    #21878950 - 06/30/15 04:31 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

As always, sorry about the picture quality.

T. Bridgesii Monstrose

I've never wanted to cut on my TBM's, far too attractive.
But I knocked one off a while ago, and it finally rooted and pupped.
I took a good while to root...thought it was a goner.

Thanks to MH - 6 loph's from seed. I'm estimating around 2 yrs of age, give or take.

Gymnocalycium Baldanium

More Pereskiopsis than I can keep up with.

T. Pachanoi

T. Bridgesii and some Peruvianus seedlings, little etoliated I know.

Random Grafts & Rooted cuttings

Datura Innoxia

Heimia Salicifolia - Sinicuichi w/ Pachanoi and Datura

Leonurus Nepetifolia - Klipp Dagga with Datura

Accident but cool.

Acacia Maidenii & Simplicfolia

Turbina/Rivea Whatever Corymbosa - Climbing the tree top

Salvia D. - Not doing great but surviving.

Got my first successful rooted cut

Motherwort - Not sure which one anymore, this thing's like 10 feet tall.

I freaked this lizard out and he got himself stuck in this basket. I had to cut him out.

Baby anole, super cute.

This one came out of the drain holes, I was knocked pill bugs out and out comes this beast.

Datura Ferox - Eerie night shot

Argyreia Nervosa - Hawaiian Baby Wood Rose

Mimosa Hostilis - It's been through some rough times.

Kaffir Lime - Love these

Acorus Calamus - Sweet Flag

Moringa Oleifera

Banisteriopsis Caapi - Cielo I think - I just can't seem to do right by this.  It'll start taking off maybe a week or so, and then just stop.
Anadenanthera peregrina - Yopo too

Calea Ternifolia/Zachatechichi

Random

A spring I came across

Strange seed pod - any clues?

I've had a hard time getting HBWR seeds to germinate. I always hear about nicking them but I don't know how to do that properly I guess.

Can you elaborate on how you got them to germinate? I would love a garden like yours. I have a good number of ethnos on top of veggies and such but you have relatively difficult things going very well. And congrats for that!

I germinated mine by using some fingernail clippers and clipping the outer shell off near the seed's 'pointed' end. Then soak in water for a day or so till they swell and look like they are sprouting, then plant in soil. That's just my experience though.

The HBWR I actually got from a vendor as a seedling, so I kinda cheated with that one.

As far as nicking seeds goes.
I use a tiny triangle file or a razor blade to lightly file/shave down
(opposite side of the eye/hilum) until I can barely start seeing the inside cotyledon.

Here's a video that might help.

Hmm, next time I will have to try nicking on the opposite side like you mention. I wonder if the placement of my nicking has something to do with the high mortality rate I suffered.

That's just what I read when I was researching it for the first time.

Something about being sure not to cut the eye because that's where the initial growth will occur.

Could be talkin outta my ass here, but maybe not. :hehehe:

Well, what you say makes sense. I wondered about this myself when I was trying it for the first time. But then I concluded that if I nick at the eye, it would just let the sprout have an easier time getting out...

Maybe where I nicked it had no negative effect and something else killed most of mine off. Maybe where I nicked it doomed them from the beginning. I am gonna try again soon and maybe try both ways side-by-side to see if it matters...

I cut the guessing game and googled it.

I found this bit:

http://www.seedsavers.org/site/pdf/HardSeedGuide.Final.pdf

Scarification creates a small opening in the seed coat where
water can be absorbed. This can be done at home with a pair
of nail clippers. The best place to nick the seed is opposite the
hilum, or point of pod attachment, where you are least likely
to cause damage.
Simply make a small, shallow cut using the
corner of the nail clippers.
Be sure to cut only the seed coat. A deeper cut may harm the
seed’s growing tissues.

I'm bored, here's some recent photos.

Brugmansia cuttings I'd thrown in a waste bucket, now thriving. Along with some date palm seeds that sprouted.

Wild Mustang Grapes

Spherical fungi I found on a walk.

Wild Tx Lace cactus.

Sinicuichi, D. Ferox, Klip Dagga and Coral Bean.

Comfrey

sinicuichi

one of many of my scraggly nicotiana rustica. sowed too late in the season.
