Wildlife bothering oysters?
    #21877253 - 06/30/15 09:46 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Want to fruit my oysters outside (got pins today!!!) but im worried about wildlife(raccoons, gnats, squirrels, etc.) pestering them.

Is this a problem commonly encountered?

I always lose most to gnats and slugs.

What are they growing in? Maybe put some mesh over it? A 5 gal paint strainer bag should be fine enough mesh to stop most bugs.

I would definitely sprinkle Sluggo on the ground around your fruiting area. Slugs do nasty damage. I have had squirrels and deer eat mushrooms off of hardwood logs and baskets, so if these are prevalent in your area you should try making some kind of enclosure. You can help keep gnats away with a net as stated in another reply, but you can also use neem oil on them.
