moisture and casing question
    #2187725 - 12/18/03 01:24 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

How many days into a casing do you guys generally moisten up your casings? One casing looked drier than it did (this is day 4) so water was lightly drizzled on it. I just want to know your tactics for moisture and casings during incubation.

Thank you

H202 and water in a spray bottle. Use like a 20:1 water to H202 mixture and spray that casing lightly, dont soak it. The H202 is to keep things from going contam crazy i beleive.

It's always better to err on the side of being too dry. If a casing's too dry, then a flush might be a little dissapointing, and the yeild might be a little low. If a casing's too wet, then the chances of contamination increase drasticly , and if it contams then you lose all future flushes. What i like to do is to makes holes in the bottom of my casing trays and give them a thorough soaking after harvesting a flush, then just leave them until after i've harvested the next flush. I also have a second container to collect water from the casing tray holes. Using an H202 solution helps as well.

well before it even has its first flush, do you even spray it? or just case it, cover it, and not worry about it til it pins.

The casing tech my friend uses calls for heavy misting when you first make the casing, then just cover and put in a dark place for 7 days, then take out and open and heavily mist again, then just mist whenever it looks dry until pinning. Most things I read say not to mist durring incubation.
