Learning Russian
    #21876598 - 06/30/15 05:10 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Ever since I read Tom Rob Smith trilogy novels (Child 44, Agent 6 and Secret Speech), I fell in love with Russia. I also have Russian blood in me, my mums grandad was Russian. Is learning Russian hard or easy? Has anyone else done it?
Native Russian speakers, in your personal experience, how is the Russian language? How are the pronunciations? The grammar? Etc.

It's fairly easy if you are learning from/with someone who already knows it and lives in old Russia. There are quite a few words that sound the same and mean the same thing, so that helps. Fairly straightforward alphabet except for a couple ending characters. Easier to learn Hrvatska, though. lol

I don't know how to speak Russian but I recall reading a story online of a man who used micro doses of psilocybin mushrooms to aid in his studies. Best way to learn a language is to live in an area that forces you to learn the language.

Humans are really good at adapting when we need to figure out how to read a menu, but we otherwise suck at developing skills that don't seem to have any immediate benefit.

I found learning the Cyrillic alphabet surprisingly easy. Of course, that just gives you the ability to sound out words, not understand them. :-)

Unfortunately, I forgot it almost as quickly. Figured it would be more practical to focus on improving my girlfriends English.

My girlfriend speaks it fluently she was born there I have picked up some. It's a very hard language to learn and be able to speak without sounding like a stupid American because of how the words are pronounced. The grammar seemed pretty easy there is masculine and feminine like Spanish. There are slso Spanish cognates. I got CDs for my car that I listen to they helped a fair amount in my understanding of it.

as a non native speaker, start by learning the Cyrillic alphabet first, once you
know the sounds the letters make it will be easy to actually pick up the language
by putting meanings to the words

Russian is very difficult but not as hard as Chinese. It is harder than the so called romance languages, has tricky grammar and as was said, a different alphabet.

Learning any language is hard, even an easy one like Spanish. You have to practice a lot, when you learn a few words and how to pronounce them correctly, make sentences with them then make a dialogue in which you say something and the other person replies.

Russian is about as hard as polish, Hungarian, finnish, etc. Chinese is hard because not only a different alphabet but symbols for words that you have to memorize. The pronunciation is hard too, the tone system. There is a word which is a verb to be, pronounced like "shure" but if you use the wrong tone it means "shit". They used to giggle when I tried to speak. I wonder why?

Get on polyglot.com or some other site where you can practice with people via Skype. First learn some basics of course.

You think Slavic languages are only marginally more difficult than Roman(ce)?

French is lame and easy ;p
Slavic are hardcore O.o

Friend of mine is learning it at the moment and i've seen his spreadsheets, no thanks.

The alphabet, the large amount of words which translated only mean a few things xD

Do it, OP!

You could always try to get into Russian games and start from there. That's how I started learning a lot of languages accompagnied by following blogs, learning the basics & alphabet & adding people of said native country.
(I warn you, Russians are VERY RUDE and VERY DIRECT! NO THANKS!)
