Got some new supplies to work with
    #21875556 - 06/29/15 08:47 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

A kind individual who shall remain nameless for the time being donated a bunch of brilliant supplies; Though I don't know the best way I can utilize all of these items. Some guidance would be greatly appreciated. The spores I plan on working with are ATL #7. :super:

I always forget the picture

:fuckinawesome: You could make some special brf cakes. I've never tried adding poppy seeds to cakes, I've heard of people doing it with success. I don't know about the ratios tho.

Those bags with filters will melt in a PC so they must be put into another bag to avoid getting the filter wet. Then boil as you would PF.:cool:

Yeah, was thinking a rye/verm cake would be nice, think I should really add the poppy to it?

I'll have to get some other bags, but I'll definately hang onto these; They'll be brilliant for stones.

Suggestions for the rye berries? Save them for penis envy maybe?

I haven't made rye/verm cakes before, but I would assume that the poppy seeds would add some much needed nutrients to the mixture. Try it out, it might work well.

I would add some brf as well to give the cakes some more mass/nutrients. Good luck :thumbup:

No need to add brf these cakes were Pf tek subbed out with rye flower. I'd say rye flower has more nutrition than rice flour but have no proof to back this up other than if rice were so good we wouldn't be growing on rye berries and grains.

What do you generally use the poppy for?

Rice is hard to prep compared to other grains.
If it's not done perfect it doesn't break up easy like wbs or rgs.
It's not ideal for spawning. Very starchy and gets mushy easily.

poppies are weeds. theyre easy to grow.
What color are the seeds?

Blue seeds= pink flowers
Black =red
Brown= purple
beige= mostly white
white = pure white

Poppies with white tend to be more potent.

usually the big bags are blue or black seeds.

I just milk the sap and eat 4 pods worth then wait 2 hrs and smoke a bowl lol.

Dumb question, but better safe than sorry; I'm supposed to inoculate via that blue self healing thing, right? The white stuff I'm guessing is microfiber of some sort? Going to do the small ones, as the large one seems to have shown signs of contaminates.

Ive used whole brown rice as my first grow and it was pretty easy and not starchy or mushy. You just have to rinse it after cooking.

Another thing to point out, I'm not sure if you got it, but I'd seriously refrain from verm or anything else nasty you couldn't stand in your mouth. ATL 7 is a stone producer, so you'd definitely want to have it on a substrate you don't mind tagging along for the ride :lsd:

Oh yeah, you bet; I inoculated the smaller rye berry jars, as they haven't shown any contaminates yet. Won't provide a lot of stones, but hopefully I can fruit them out of the jars and grab some prints as well.Also made a rye flour and verm cake and inoculated with gt :super:

Decided to let that contaminate progress, just for the hell of it. It was fucking gnarly, started turning black.

Also, a rye flour and vermiculite cake. Three out of four inoculation spots are showing life. Golden Teacher. Think it's only been 3-4 days now.

I'm used to my mycelium being a bit rounder in the face though, so hopefully no contaminates

Decided to try to reuse this jar and try a new strain for once.

I think I inoculated it twice though; Once while I was drunk, and once just a moment ago, just in case I didn't actually inoculate the first time. I hope my drunken sterile techniques pull through for me; Wish me luck :cheers:

Damn man sorry hear. I use alcohol to wipe the ship the flame needle and stick the needle though the alcohol wipe and into the ship if that makes sense. My AA should be here tomorrow maybe I'll throw together a few more jars for ya wbs this time instead of rye.

Ive had 3 of my 20 rye jars contaminate. :shrug:

I thought it was looking pretty good with three out of four inoculation spots showing signs of life, but today one of the spots looks like it has another mycelium developing around it. I'm guessing trichoderma.

Also, thanks for the offer, but I'm in the process of moving and I don't think I'd receive it by the time it got here. Considering that I'll be staying somewhere else temporarily, I might not be able to do any mycology, asside from maybe some shiitakes or something.

Well, no luck as of yet with the rye. No signs of life in these jars whatsoever. Except a bunch of bacteria. Smells like rotting milk, with a hint of hazelnut..

..I do however have a cake that just finished producing it's 2nd flush. Think I can crumble to a jiffy tray? How do I prep that jiffy stuff? First time I've heard of it.

Poppy tea isn't half bad btw

Crumble the cake to coir/verm first with a cheese grater to increase inoculation points during colonization. Then once the tray is fully colonized, case it with an even layer of pasteurized jiffy mix. FrankHorrigan has an excellent writeup that goes into more detail, check it out! http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18880716#18880716

I use jiffy mix more for a casing. But you may have better luck with a new PF cake and do a crumble and case.

I've heard of people doing this but that'll take a lot of cakes to fill up a whole tray. It's wiser IMO to expand it to a bulk substrate first, you'll get more fruits. :goodluck:

Spawn TO WBS? Like colonize jars and then use WBS as a substrate?

In theory, would most likely be a contam magnet though. Also getting an even pinset will be difficult because leveling out a bunch of seeds sounds like a pain in the ass.

I'll look into getting coir and a bag of verm eventually, they're both at the local Home Depot I presume. Otherwise one of the Lets Grow Mushroom videos had a near straw tek that involved a laundry basket. Seems doable. Gotta find a livestock feed supplier first though I imagine.
Also
Scoped a bit of perlite out of my terrarium where the spores drops, distributed it around the backyard in various places. Been keepin it nice and moist. Hoping to see some sort of progress in the next few weeks,

dont use old cakes as spawn.

edit; mix new cakes with coir/manure/straw as bulk.
and then optionally add a casing layer of jiffy if you want.

Coir is found at pet stores... Usually sold in bricks (sometimes loose in a bag)... It's used for reptile bedding. :uptosomething:

My 2 cents..

:lol: well assuming that the ship was sterilized and was in a sterile environment, using alcohol would only make it dirtier. However like you said, agar is the actual way to go about it. :lol:

It was sterilized but taken out of the sterile environment (PC) for inoculation.

I still haven't found agar in stores yet. Going to get it on amazon I think. Along with petras.
Got a huge fucking bag of vermiculite today though. Rye flower cakes are going to be made tomorrow.

2:1:1 Verm:flour:water

Mix Verm and water first then add the flour and some coffee if you have some.

Rye flour is like $4 for 5lbs at the supermarket near me :shrug:

It seems the perlite in the terrarium is developing algae. Should I kill it? :whatdoyouthink:

Won't hurt the cakes or the perlite but yes.

I was going to ask if it would produce oxygen and help out the cakes, but after reading this, I'm guessing no.

Quote:

Like all green plants, algae produce oxygen during the daylight hours as a by-product of photosynthesis. This is usually a major source of oxygen in fish ponds. In darkness, however, all plants consume oxygen, including algae. Algae blooms in natural water bodies or fish ponds normally produce much more oxygen in the daylight than they consume during the night, but some situations reduce the amount of oxygen a bloom produces without reducing its nighttime oxygen consumption. Trace minerals or nutrients needed by the algae are occasionally used up, causing some or even all, of the bloom to die back temporarily. The resulting bacterial decomposition and loss of normal oxygen production can lead to oxygen depletions and fish kills. Pond water generally changes from a deep green to black, gray, brown or clear after a phytoplankton die-off. An additional problem caused by dense blooms, especially in excessively deep ponds, is stratification. As mentioned elsewhere, stratification involves layering of the pond water into warm, oxygen-producing upper zones and cool, oxygen-consuming bottom waters. Shading caused by dense blooms limits photosynthesis and dissolved oxygen levels at the pond bottom, resulting in a buildup of potentially toxic compounds, even in aerated ponds. This situation can lead to physiological stress, reduced fish growth, and even fish kills if bottom waters are mixed too rapidly with the rest of the pond. This type of mixing, referred to as a turnover, occurs when cool rain water or heavy wind on the pond surface breaks down layering patterns. Turnovers are often observed in natural waters and ponds in the fall or spring after severe weather disturbances. The potential for a turnover can be detected by an increasing temperature difference between a pond’s bottom layers and its surface waters. If a turnover is likely, prepare for aeration when necessary. Algae blooms also respond to changes in the weather, and the denser the bloom, the more severe the response can be. Photosynthesis slows down under cloudy conditions, and, as a result, oxygen production decreases. Extremely calm days may also reduce photosynthesis and oxygen production, even under sunny conditions, by preventing phytoplankton in the middle layers of the pond from mixing near the brighter surface. In summer, oxygen problems may arise because of a simple physical property of water. The warmer the water, the less dissolved oxygen it can hold. When a dense bloom produces a surplus of oxygen on a summer afternoon, the oxygen will not stay in solution and escapes into the atmosphere. During the night, the bloom attempts to take more oxygen out of the water than what remains from daytime photosynthesis. When this occurs, dissolved oxygen levels approach zero.

Only two one of those jars is showing signs of colonization, so I made a new golden teacher syringe and inoculated the other two again, and made the biggest cake I've ever made.

Didn't see all the maggots in that jar?
One of the small jars is showing life, and it's a bit early to tell on the other two.
