Maine ID - possible P. Caerulipes
    #21874997 - 06/29/15 07:00 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Next to a stream on a log

Gills:
Brownish

Stem:
brown, white at the base with slight bluish tint

Cap:
an inch or two on the biggest ones, brown with more than one shade of brown

Spore print color:
I didn't take any home because most were young. I'll pick them in a few days and report back.

Bruising:
I didn't really notice any, but I only handled one for less then a minute. The base might have been slightly bluish.

Other information:
My thoughts are Caerulipes. I know they're rare but the elements fit... On a log next to a stream in Maine late June-September

And if they are Bluefoots, the spore print should be brown/purple? I'm going to drive over in the morning and take some of the bigger ones.

Might be a Kuehneromyces sp. Definitely not a Psilocybe though.

Ugh, I knew they looked off and should have bruised more blue. I also figured it was still early for bluefoots.

Never hurts to look! I've yet to see a Psilocybe in the wild.

I've heard the rare Bluefoot is common in Maine. I was expecting them to fruit in about a month but this location definitely matched the habitat they like: dark, wet gully next to a stream. No way did I expect to find them so easily though.

Yup they're up there: http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/advanced_search?q=2bQFe

Persistence pays off, and the more you learn about mushrooms, the cooler the "boring" ones get :super:

I'm pretty close to one of those spots. Definitely chomping at the bit to check that area out

It is still early for bluefoot, but keep searching for the right habitat. The more you search the better you will get at identifying the other little brown mushrooms that like to grow in your area. I usually find some good chanterelle spots and even the occasional black trumpet while out looking for bluefoot habitats. It's nice to come home with a few edibles to make your hunting feel worth while.
