Catylist for low temperature oxydation of H2 into H2O?
    #2187453 - 12/18/03 11:24 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I need a way of converting hydrogen into water at a lower temperature than it's flash point in air. In other words, without "burning" it.

Build a hydrogen fuel cell, then you'll also get some electricity out of the conversion.

Are you trying to get rid of the hydrogen (do you really need to make water, or would something else do as well?)

Mostly trying to get rid of the hydrogen. That would be sufficient, but it would be ideal if I could convert it into water.

We're talking about a fairly small amount of hydrogen, maybe cubic ft. a day.

If you want to make hydrogen to water, it would have to react with oxygen.....which you produced along with hydrogen...so this is really a magic circle.

Assuming that the hydrogen came from water and not something like reacting zink and HCl.

Several metals will react with hydrogen to form a hydride... lithium for certain, and I think titanium (perhaps oxide) as well. They act like sponges and soak up hydrogen. When you heat them, they release the gas.

I assumed it because he was talking about electrolyzing water yesterday to obtain oxygen.

Yes, I'm trying to make a small O2 generator but I want to do something to get rid of the Hydrogen fire/explosion hazard.

If there were a catalyst that I could pass it through that would oxidize it back into water which would drip back into the reservoir that would be a very nice solution. it could go for a very long time before needing a refill.

1) It would be cheaper to rent a tank of oxygen than any method of producing it
2) Converting water to hydrogen + oxygen gives us 2H20 -> H2 + 2O2
3) Converting hydrogen and oxygen back to water gives us H2 + 2O2 -> 2H20
4) Water -> Hydrogen -> Water == no excess oxygen (subtract 2 & 3 above)

(Points 2,3, and 4 are what anno was saying above...)

If you are only producing a cubic foot or two of hydrogen over 24 hours, just vent the gas outside... that little isn't much a risk unless you contain it somehow. Also, be careful with hydrogen... as little as 5% to as much as 95% in oxygen can detonate... finally, don't underestimate the fire hazard from the oxygen.

The Hydrogen would not be being reacted with the oxygen that was generated it would be reacting with atmospheric oxygen.

Basically it would be an oxygen pump moving oxygen in the atmosphere to a higher contained concentration inside of a container-- like a terrarium for example.

Where can I buy $5 worth of Oxygen, and where can I get an adapter that will regulate the output of such a small amount?

if you have a tank then you can get it from a welding or medical supply, most have regulators that will allow you to reduce the volume to a trivial amount, you could also lease an O2 generator from a med supply company or steal one based on your budget, $5 for the gas to pick it up

I can run with 3 if they are med tanks, 1 if its a welding tank and I have a way to strap it. it's the O2 generator that would be a problem.
