Use of Polyacrylamide over perlite
    #21873672 - 06/29/15 01:36 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

So I was about to go to the local home depot to get some perlite, then I remembered i have a bag of "Water Storing Crystals" Which is a polyacrylamide crystal. It swells to 100x its original size and is suppose to release moisture into the soil. Would this work instead of using perlite? I would like to save myself a few bucks if at all possible.

I got perlite at a wholesale garden supply, home depot is a ripoff for perlite.
as for the other crystals, IDK. might be worth a try i suppose

That's kinda like the exact opposite of perlite

It is actually used for the same purpose as perlite, so i figured it may work the same. It is just a different element.

I don't know anything about the product you are mentioning, but look into and if doesn't do anything harmful to your microherd and it does as good a job as perlite, I say do it.  Perlite is a horrible shitty thing to work with, I really hate it.

If you want a cheap and sustainable way to add aeration/moisture retention/drainage, I highly recommend rice hulls.  They work better than perlite in my experience, aren't dusty like perlite.  They are about 45% silica so they will decompose very slowly and provide you with a slow drip of Si, whatever that may do for you I don't know.

I'm gonna look into that stuff you mentioned now.

http://www.extension.org/pages/63493/soil-amendments-and-practices-of-unproven-value#.VZHHiPlViko

Polyacrylamide gels (also known as insoluble hydrogels, water crystals, or water retention granules)
These gels or crystals will absorb water and swell up to several times their original size. The gels then slowly release water over time into the soil. However, within two to five years, these gels degrade into substances such as acrylamide. Acrylamide is a neurotoxin and carcinogen, and can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled. Even in its original, intact state, polyacrylamide can cause skin irritation and mucus membrane inflammation.

Use rice hulls, if you don't want to pay for perlite.

If you try it let us know how it works. I have used it for gardening and was not even slightly impressed. It really seems to favor absorbing water over releasing it.

Is this for plants of mushrooms?

Those water absorbing crystals suck for potting mixes.
I'd avoid them.

No it's not. Perlite is used to improve the drainage of water though soil so it can dry more easily. Water absorbing crystals do the opposite, they retain large amounts of water.

This is true, but the crystals also maintain proper soil moisture, making it so you dont have to water as much. I just figured if you used them when you are ready to fruit your mushrooms, it would act the same way as the perlite. I think I will just go buy some perlite, and do a couple trays with the Polyacrylamide.

And yes, it is for mushrooms. I should of been more specific. I had a shit load of the Polyacrylamide crystals from when I had my pot garden. I now use the river and a mile and a half of tubing. So i no longer need them.

W will let you all know how it goes when I do in fact try it.

I think you must be confusing perlite with vermiculite

No, I was going to use the crystals instead of perlite as a form of moisture to keep humidity up in my containers. I should never post something when Im drunk. I just sound like a fucking idiot haha.

Perlite increases humidity because of it's microcrystaline structure that has a huge amount of surface area to transpire moisture.

I'd listen to Chris. He's telling you nicely, man.

I doubt the Polyacrylamide will transpire enough to be effective for a fruiting chamber.

Somebody tried that stuff about 6 years ago and since I haven't seen much about it since It probably didn't work or worked about the same as perlite. You could try it OP and see how it goes. You'd probably need a good bit of fae to keep the crystals evaporating.

Yeah. I am just going to try it in one fruiting chamber and use perlite for the rest. But I will post an update when I do get to that point.

edit: I am going to set up a test run, and see if it works before hand. I will post pics of the day to day effects of the polyacrylmide in the chamber.

I bought a decent sized bag of perlite today from home depot for just under $5, It will be enough for 3-4 chambers.
