The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Last I checked people diagnosed w/ mental illness are still people. Looks like the right of the people to keep and bear Arms of the category of firearms, shall be infringed in the U.S.

Have you ever been around someone who has a mental illness? Someone very close to me in my family was diagnosed with bipolar disorder a few years ago. She was no longer the same person I remembered. When she was manic, nothing would stand in her way. Whatever goal she had chosen, which was often fighting some injustice, was the only thing she would focus on. All day and all night. If she had access to a gun, I can only imagine the damage she could have done. She's a wonderful person, who is extremely intelligent and caring, but she cannot be trusted with firearms, not when she is manic.
I understand that people with mental illnesses may feel discriminated against, but if you've ever spent time with someone who is mentally ill, it becomes IMMEDIATELY apparent that it is for public safety.

Are people with mental illness generally part of well regulation militias?
-------------------- I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them. I also attack my side if I think they're wrong. People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

If you hung out with militia folk, you wouldn't have to ask. Having a mental illness is pretty much a prerequisite.
OP: No right in the Constitution is absolute. The government can regulate any of the rights as long as they have a compelling state interest in doing so and the regulation is narrowly tailored to that interest. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that preventing gun violence by insane people is a compelling interest.

In most states, those diagnosed with mental illness have the right to bear arms (as they should)--provided they haven't been involuntarily committed to a psych ward in the past.

If they kill the bear themselves and cut its arms off, sure, they can keep them

People with mental disorders aren't incapable of basic tasks like driving a car. They, however, can have trouble with logical thought processes and are more likely to act irrationally and suddenly. A person is less likely to want to use a car violently, compared to a gun, and the lack of a licsence won't prevent them from using a car like that anyways. Lack of access to a car (or gun) will prevent such actions.
And the danger is not just murdering other people, but also suicide (which we have data to show is a larger issue in the mentally ill) and accidents.

I'm not an expert on mental illness, so take everything with a grain of salt, but there is a history of it in my family, with forced stays in institutions. The illnesses they had/have were not the kind where they would premeditate a violent act with a gun, it would be something that happens spur of the moment. Now, I realize this is no where near the case with all mentally ill people, but stopping them from being able to purchase a gun through legit channels, would be enough to prevent every mentally ill person I've known from acquiring a gun. The episode would pass, and the desire for violence or to own a gun would pass. Again, I realize it won't stop all, or perhaps even close to all, mentally ill people from acquiring guns, but I think it's a heck of a good thing. I don't want to see a single irrational gun death that could be prevented.
And no, I don't have a source besides the personal experience I described above. The violent episodes I witnessed would have immediately involved weapons, but not a car, except to go to get around. Again, certainly not everyone's experience, but that's what I saw. And again, even if you take away their license, that won't prevent them from driving if they really want to. If you take away their guns, it may prevent them from shooting.
Finally, to reiterate, all of this comes from personal experience, and I'll be the first to tell you that the plural of anecdote is not data. However, from what I've seen, I think taking away guns from those who have a severe mental illness is definitely beneficial for society.
