structures in music composition
    #2185722 - 12/17/03 04:17 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

well I was reading the liner notes for a Tangerine Dream box set I got from the library, and it was saying they sometimes composed using a prismic structure. Does anyone have any idea what that might mean?

Also, does anyone have any other ideas for structures? I often compose in a tree-like structure, which is the only way I can think to describe it. AABA is boring and tired. Also thinking about a sort of holographic structure, where you have say a five-note theme, and you expand it into five parts, each part being based on the successive note, i.e. vwxyz being the theme and then the five parts being in the keys of v, w, x, y, z. Any other thoughts?

I think Tchaikovsky did something like that, made a motive, and put in keys of the notes it consisted of. I think it was him.... Either way your idea is a great one.

Anyways, some other structures could be something used quite often but still bad ass is a Fugue-which is variations on a theme that are played concurrently usually x beats off-- or Theme and variations, or some expansion on the fibonacci sequence (a+b=c, b+c=d...)
prismic could mean A at the top, and B, C, D, E at the bottom of a pyramid shape, going back to A each time.

The possibilities are pretty endless. What sort of music do you compose?

Tangerine Dream, eh? The guy I am staying with, he has all of their cd's. From what I've heard, they are really talented guys. He'd have some sort of song playing that would sound really similar to some of Shpongle's stuff, and he's like "Ja, this song is from... 1974, I think?"
Peace.

cool fibonacci idea. I write solo guitar music, fingerstyle. I have lots of little snippets, and I want to build full pieces out of some of them. The easy way out is to just sorta stick them together end-on-end, but that way doesn't have much thought in it. I guess it's a more emotional way, or something, which is alright (I mean some of my best friends are emotional), but I tend towards the more cerebral music writing. Which is alright too.
