Lophophora red spots Help!
    #21867612 - 06/28/15 08:36 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

They are tiny little orange spots, i'm thinking it's rust or something of that sort. I don't know what to do.

Can you squish em? If you can squish em, then they're insects of some kind.

They're not insects, they're scab-like.

This seems the start of a red mite spider attack. While it is not really dangerous for the plant, it is highly undesiderable, and very unpleasant to look at. If you act immediately you will have an irrilevant scarring , barely noticeable, but don't understimate the problem, as you don't want to ruin such a beautiful exemplar.

If you don't have nothing on your hand right now, just mist the loph, as red mites love dry enviroment. An insecticidal soap, or a mineral oil solution is reccomended.

Mm.. I'm leaning more towards rust because I haven't seen any mites.

Organic material doesn't really oxidize, though.

There's fungal diseases that occur on plants that get called rusts, as it looks similar to rust on metal. The rust is pustules that bear the spores, which get dispersed via water droplets and/or wind.

@5is: I'd have to agree that it's a rust-like thing happening on your plants. I seem to get it in Winter, when temps are low. Not much at all in Summer, which I think is the season you're in currently.

If this plant is relatively new then it was probably grown in a greenhouse before getting to you. It could be acclimatising, and a few dots, spots and blemishes may appear until such time as the epidermis has toughened to your conditions. Once this happens the spots should stop.

Now if the spots are getting worse or spreading then you might have to do something about it. As it is there's not much you can do and they usually get rust coloured, then dry and turn into a scab. If the soil's very heavy with organic matter then I would change to mineral mixes. I've done this over the years and I've noticed less rust spots on my lophs. I think too much organic matter retains too much moisture and it causes these spots to come up. Also excess humidity can cause these, I know people in the tropics battle rust constantly. Maybe even excessive temperatures coupled with too regular waterings are causing it. I can't be sure just giving you some ideas to think about.

A dust of sulphur powder will not do any harm and might be a good preventative measure....

Thanks man, that's what I figured it was. I'm treating it with a fungicide, kept out of the sun to avoid phototoxicity.
