Blackish Tint and Bumpy Surface on Pink Oyster Pins
    #21867455 - 06/28/15 07:29 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

OK. Now I have a problem. They seem to like the temps well enough, but I noticed the caps are bumpy in appearance and have a blackish tint. They all look that way. My first though was "Shit! They grew through mold in the bag and now it's growing on them outside the bag!" I was gonna just toss the whole bag, but curiosity got to me and I cut the bag open to see what it looked like. No visible mold and smelled just fine. I have had bags mold when they were too wet and you can definitely smell it. So now I am confused. What the hell is going on?!

OK. After I searched and searched, I may have found an answer. I still would like to hear any opinions though. One post that I found stated that it could be because of low RH. I had them in a SGFC with just a blanket over the top, no misting, because I didn't think they were going to pin yet. When I did notice them I put the lid on and started misting. So maybe low RH?

I'm not sure why the caps look that way, but it's not mold growing on them.

Not sure. I have had some feedback saying it is normal for them to start out that way. They are growing super fast and look much better as they grow. I have been eating them and haven't died yet . Here is a pic of another bag I have in the SGFC.

After more experience growing these, I have found the brown/black tint on the edges to be quite common and normal. As they mature they lose this tint. I have also found that when pink oyster is grown in temps from 85-103 degrees, they grow very fast, but are not nearly as dense and meaty. Just some info for others out there.
