Fruiting questions with a casing layer (with pics!)
    #21866546 - 06/27/15 10:34 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys,

Thanks so much to everyone on here for all the information they've already posted.  I've got a lot to learn, but it's been a huge help already.

That being said, I place a thin layer of casing soil on top of my mycellium saturated hay (thinking it would provide a better uniform surface for fruiting as well as provide moisture for the layer).  It's been about a week now, and the surface is ~40-60% colonized.

I was assuming that I would start the fruiting process when the ENTIRE surface was covered with mycellium, but this morning small pins began.

My question is:  Where did I go wrong? Did I?  Is it safe to say that the logical step is to allow the mushrooms to begin fruiting by creating an environment with appropriate FAE, evaporation and light?  Any general tips for a beginner would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I'm not sure what you're saying.

Did you case at 100% colonization, or did you just put a layer of sub on top when you spawned to bulk?

No

Yes.....6500K lighting on a 12/12 schedule, and tons of FAE......

Sorry if I was unclear.

What I mean is, I allowed the mycellium to colonize essentially all of the straw, creating a fairly homogeneous, thick white network throughout.  Then I added the casing soil.

Should I be concerned about the side pinning mushrooms?  I'll start looking up how to deal with picking them that will allow for a second (maybe third?) flush.

I had this same problem with my only two tubs (both cased with 50/50+) thus far.

Neither seemed terribly interested in colonizing the casing and sidepinned like mofos while the casing colonization was underway.

I feel like adding the casing layer perhaps creates a sort of wet, damp, low oxygen surface over the top of the sub which is actually the least optimal surface for pinning (casing too wet?)  I'm experimenting with some earlier casing timings, but haven't had any results yet due to some bad spawn I didn't notice.

I have had successful casings on foil pans that colonized quickly, though they seemed to pin from the sub surface under the colonized casing during the first flush.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

No, this does not look right...

Thanks for the feedback, I'm thinking my casing layer was too thick (2-3") and damp preventing easy colonization?

Just finished my first flush harvest!  Now I'm going to leave it on a 12/12 6500 k cycle with good FAE and humidity and hope for a second.  Have you had much luck with second/third flushes?  Is getting in going in a couple weeks reasonable?

I've had success with two or three flushes without dunking the substrate. Misting the surface heavily after the first flush will keep the substrate healthy and promote new pin formation. Usually after the third flush, my tub has shrunk away from the sides and pins don't mature anymore.

to avoid the side pinning next time put 2 black garbage bags at the bottom of your tubs and after mixing substrate with spawn trim the bags to an inch or so above the surface...as for the weak pinset on top, your casing layer is much too thick, a casing shouldn't be more than 1/4 of an inch to maybe 1/2 an inch deep...if you case at all that is...otherwise your setup looks pretty good!

They do not have to be black, white or clear bags work just fine as well.....

Light is not the cause of side pins, FAE hitting the sides of the substrate is...

Glad to see you correcting people again. As harsh as it may be to the individual who is corrected, it really benefits this place in the grand scheme of things when others decide to use the search function and come across your posts.
