help needed about shaping a San Pedro cactus
    #21866319 - 06/27/15 09:25 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hey all,

I have recently bought two san pedro cacti and a few succulents. these ones aren't to eat. they just look awesome
but anyway, i wanted to make one of the cacti have off shoots. I know this can be done by chopping the top off but it doesn't look very nice. I was wondering if i cut a "V" shape into two sides of the cactus around about the middle, would it create off shoots. You know, like the cartoon kinda stereotypical cactus.

Also if it is possible, then why don't cultivators do that instead of chopping the top? or is that so they can re pot the off cut?

Thanks for the help

Try asking for help here at the Ethnobotanical Garden, they would know more than I.

Great looking cacti tho!

Nice cacti/succulents.

The cactus you're referring to, the cartoony one, is most likely Carnegiea gigantea aka the Saguaro cactus, it's a different type of cactus so therefore has different growth habits than your pedros.

You will not be able to get your pedros to take such a form, closets you can get is to cut it and let the pups grow out from the areoles, which will look similar.
