Active Gymnopilus's?
    #21866178 - 06/27/15 08:49 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hello Everyone,
First off, this is my first post, so just getting familiar with Shroomery. I have, recently, been trying to identify active Gymnopilus species, and picked some in central CT just today. I am going to take a spore print soon, but could anyone try and identify the mushrooms in the picture? I'm thinking possibly luteus or junonius. Any info is much appreciated, and on a side note, are these mushrooms big enough that if they were Gymno's, one could eat just one and trip? Thanks.

Nah. Might be Paxillus involutus, but it's hard to say. And you need about 100 grams of fresh gyms to feel anything.

from the post i'd suggest spending some more time here:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17157489/page/1/fpart/1/vc/1

before you go into the woods again.

maybe make a little field guide on your phone of the images.  look at them while you take a dump instead of playing candycrush. look at them often so you know them

Joust et. al. have really done a bang-up job on getting some fantastic photographs of the Gymnopilus species to use as a means to key in on usually significant features, like bulbous stipes at the bases and the gill attachment.  giving an hour or so to this end of it will greatly help when you're face to face with the mushroom.

happy hunting and good luck
