Photo of bacteria on plates

2 of the plates were from a sloppy pour I guess, never poured a bad plate before
Anyways a lot of folks ask me what bacteria look like on agar. So I figured I start a thread where people can put up photos of bacteria in plates and jars, mold colonies etc
What to look for

That my friend is why we take tissue samples from inside the fruit, as to not grab anything that a contam has landed on....lol.

That aspergillus looks just like trich to me. How can you tell the difference?

Trich never looks like that on plates in my experience. Also rarely does it turn green on a plate if it's growing with mycelium too.

Trich usually has a crystaline texture to the surface and a bubbling growth pattern. Also like bodhi said it usually needs some decent FAE to sporulate.

On substrates though powder green look can indeed be a multitude of species and even a few different families. Aspergillus, penicillium, trichoderma.. They all can range in different shades too. The online mushroom community generally calls them all trich. Realistically speaking a microscope would for sure tell what it is.

All three of the aforementioned contam species have their own shade of green. Been blessed to not run into too much Aspergillus, but have seen a fair share of penicillum and trichoderma. Penicillum is a teal green, where trichoderma is a dark, deep, forest green color. Very distinct. Trichoderma is the bane if the mushroom culture. HATE!

Sweet, good to know. Just started agar so I've only seen trich in PF jars. Pretty sure it was trich everytime

Interesting. I've also seen a bright green/mossy green look in certain species of trich. However I know what you mean by the teal look in penicillium. I've seen that quite a bit too.
So looking at bods pic, I can see it's a very fine powdery look. Almost looks like a smooth surface, whereas trich has more visible particle/granite look. Is this a key distinction between the 2 on substrates? Also another distinction as mentioned before is that it doesn't sporulate on plates well. Just curious how you guys visually tell the difference. *runs off to look at pics of them*

I don't know what the guys are talking about over the issue of trich not sporulating on agar very often, because I'v had trich break out on several plates over the last 6 years. Recently had a contam breakout in the lab. 40 plus pre-poured plates that were sitting for over a month and a half ALL had trich in them. Don't know how long said trich was growing on the plates for. What is known is as soon as the contam was discovered it was immediately discarded. Black mold is another that'll sporulate all over your agar media.

Actually different species of each have a multitude of colors.
