Instead of misting...

..Do you think I could just poke a hole into the cake using a straw and then fill the straw with water? I've misted like 3-4 times today (because I don't have a casing layer, and the mushrooms are picking up growth speed)

no....we mist the cakes so moisture is constantly evaporating off the surface, which is a main pinning trigger.
Injecting water, or using a straw will do very little.....mycellium is not a sponge.

Let alone the fact that you're damaging the mycelium and potential pinning sites by doing this, and also creating a vector for contamination.
You can try bottom watering(set the cake in a shallow dish of water for an hour or so) if you want to let the cake drink, but stabbing it is not the solution.
Haha nice headliner/title there PF, I too wish Apple HQ would cave into itself forming a vast crater to hell, where it belongs.

Let's all ignore my stupid theory/question and bash Apple instead
Honestly, I wasn't even going to give it a shot (unless I had extras), because stabbing a living organism generally stresses it out at the very least.

Try the bottom watering, it's advocated by at least a few people who know what they're doing and have said it helps fatten up developing fruits. I do some version of it I guess where I water down the sides of the substrate in a monotub, works for me.
You do still have to mist though.

I heard leaving still water on the mushrooms can cause bacterial infections? All my pins are forming at the bottom also. Would I be better off just soaking it upside down?

I don't think turning it upside down is a good idea in the middle of fruiting. Also the standing water would be there less than an hour so, contracting a bacterial infection in that timeframe would indicate you live in some kind of weird... yeasty sewer cave.
Since you have pins there, I would suggest you just mist them really heavily in the areas that don't have pins on them. You can mist the pins too but you don't want them to have standing water on them. Just make sure you don't mist your fruits in the last 12 hours or so before you harvest them or they'll take forever to dry.

What if next time you make cakes, you put a straw in the jar (as tall as the jar minus an inch). Then put an inch of cake material in the jar. Then add straw ans fill in material around it. Then do your thing. When it's colonized, it will be sticking out the top because of the verm layer. Pull it out and fill it up. I like the idea.

You just described how to make a penis mold, but with different words as placeholders.

Yeah, I try not to get them soaked, but the spray bottle I use has a very thin mist that's kind of hard to control. Looks like morning dew.

Lots of people have done it, at least 1 non sponsor has a tek written up on their site, do a search for drinking straw, if you just search for straw you get hits for straw for bulk substrate.

I've heard of leaving 10-15 ml of water on a saucer and putting the cake on top of it and replacing the water every morning at least that's what pasty recommended. Mist as you normally would.
