I didn't realize there was a huge pool of more qualified teachers standing ready to enter a cutthroat job market like you suggest for the privilege to educate entitled little brats for less than 50k a year.

Teachers don't want their curricula to be micromanaged by idiots who've never even been near their schools. It's got nothing to do with unions. The whole principle behind standardized testing is bogus. If standardized tests were worth a shit then a Chinese education would be better than an American one, and it isn't. The tests are there to try to make sure that standards are met, but the standards blow and so do the tests.

There is. I used to be a teacher, so I know lots of them.
If you've less than a Bachelor's you're underqualified to be a teacher and more than a Bachelor's you're overqualified to be a teacher, at least here in Ohio. The way teachers are hired is a bit silly like that.
No one becomes a teacher for the wages.

Standardized testing is de rigeur. Are we going to judge each snowflake by how gracefully it falls? A math question is a math question is a math question. Solve for. History is either known or not known. Grammar is either followed or not followed. Vocabulary is either known or not known. These are simple concepts.
I do not disagree with your contention that the current standard testing is somewhat whack but the standard tests I took 40 plus years ago were legit.

Yeah, I know. I do not think that is a good idea. Not in high school. You need to be grounded in the basics. The people who invented the calculator were.

Education is more complicated than that though. When you over-standardize education, you effectively specify it because all the time and resources are tied up in meeting the excessive standards. The teachers can't spend time to really develop ideas that they have some expertise in because they can only spend a limited time on all the subjects and they have to cover them all. That cuts back on time for things like experiments and hands on activities because those aren't on the test. Teachers start teaching to the test and sudden;y legit questions like "why are we learning algebra?" get ignored because being able to solve a quadratic equation on test day becomes more important. It doesn't matter if the student know why their doing what their doing or if they develop any value for what they're learning because that's not on the tests.
And the tests have changed a hell of a lot since 40 years ago. They give standardized tests in elementary school now. 11 year olds should not spend all school day for a week taking lame standardized tests. Pretty soon schools are going to work as well as congress.

I don't think I ever used a calculator in a math class in college, and I took stuff like calculus and complex analysis. We learned how the calculators worked. I remember my calc teacher bitching because his incoming freshmen didn't know how to add fractions without a calculator though. I'd have been embarrassed to be them.

Change the tests back to what they were 40 years ago. The problem is not testing per se. It is the tests as they are currently constructed by overthinking liberal jerkoffs.

They're so bad it's almost like liberal jerkoffs and conservative nere-do-wells (don't foget no child left behind) teamed up to put them in place. Testing as it was done 40 years ago would be a huge improvement, which is a pretty sad statement about the progress of education.

What bachelor do you take to be able to teach in school?
Here you need at least 4 years edu + teaching experience (seminarium)
If it only required a bachelor it would be more interesting , must be boring to learn semantics for 4 years, but I suppose it sorts off all the non-serious applicants with that extra year, else we might get very unprofessional teachers maybe in some cases

Education or a general subject like Math, History, etc. Something along those lines.
Most get teaching experience during university. I did.

Very interesting since I'm still taking my bachelors, always wondered about becoming a teacher, could be fun, keep feeling like that would be a great way to live
Sounds plausible here too! - I know a few that teach besides their study So maybe that will be fine for requirements for a job

zappa, I agree, education has gone down the shitter.. they don't prepare you for life. i'm going to quote adam savage from mythbusters "If you want the kids' test scores up, bring back band and bring back shop and get kids actually learning stuff instead of teaching them how to take a test"
