Ok folks, so this IS sort of a continuation from my last ID request, http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21754594
This is the same patch from the above post; the situation is I seem to have some variety with the fruits I see. Bare with me as I attempt to describe the differences I see to the best of my ability using my limited a mature vocab. Please don't hesitate to correct, clarify, or refine- I am here to learn!! I am fairly certain I have at least 2 diff species or varieties of Guys in the patch; I have dumped "used" as well as contaminated mycelium of psilocybe galindoi (atl7), psilocybe mexicana (strain "a", Jalisco; all was heavily contaminated), and psilocybe tampanensis, all within the same area of the patch (well, it's spreading, or getting more mature, I did separate diff strains by a few feet, but guys r everywhere now). Soo from my understanding, all of those species are closely related and could/would mate/interbreed/hybridize. So, I'm not sure exactly which they are, but I believe them to be galindoi dominate, and proven very active, whicher they may be! There's a small bit of variance between some specimens, mostly the cap color, and it looks like it's due to differing moisture content/sun bleaching at different stages of development. Most are copper with a darker spot in the middle of the cap as they mature, Some aborts look blue/grey, some guys look dryer pale tan like sun bleach (still darker spot tho)... They all have the same shape. Stems are white, picked they take a peachy color, slow to blue, but it comes in time, morso at the feet. Stems are hollow, yet pretty sturdy. If I don't pick them gently enough, I'll pull up lil mycelial/sclerotia nuggets of birdseed. Spore prints dark brown-purple/black. Let's call these guys "GMTx" in this post. But then there's a few (enough to where there's a pattern) guys right in the middle of all the rest: these remind me of guys I've seen growing strait out of my aged manure pile. And on the edge of my gardens after it rains. They start off much darker than the GMTx, chocolate brown, fading to more copper through maturity and finally to pale tan. Not consistent or obvious with middle dark spot on cap, a few kinda do, looks like most don't. Stems are more peach in the ground, turn darker orange-apricot once picked, dry darker grey-brown... Not convinced of bluing at this point. The whole mushroom, both the caps and stems, are more fragile, stem splits easy, cap matures to a "wavy bell" shape. The mycelium on the very foot of these guys seems psimilar to the GMTx, yet I have not pulled and nuggets with these. Gills seem lighter, more pale tan, more of them (more crowded maybe?) want to take more prints, but the few I've taken either didnt print or came out light with a rusty brown color.... Uh oh, right?? What are these guys?? They were all growing in one fat cluster this time, usually when I see them they're more solitary...
Habitat: Willamette Valley, OR, USA; growing in garden bed, media consists of composted soil, aged composted horse manure (mixed with pine shavings)... That's the bulk of it at least... Ive laid out split-up sunflower & amaranth stalks in a way to act as a sun-screen and humidity, and laid a layer of straw overtop, and been misting/watering something like 3 times a day. It is abnormally hot and muggy here, it supposed to hit 100F today. I'll water hard for 3-4 days, then not for 3-4 days... For the last month or so...
Gills: anyone have a good resource to study up on gill differences? Deff need more education here... Like as far as shape and structure, I know colors lol GMTx: more of a grey color Mystery: pale tan
Stem: Both mushrooms are about the same size: 5-10cm tall, 3-5mm thick, hollow Differences: GMTx: white, turning peach, slow to bruise, but dries dark blue-grey. Sturdier, can bend fresh mushroom all around without damage Mystery: starts off more peachy, and stays more peachy, not convinced of bluing, let's see how they dry this time.... Much weaker, stem splits easy into 2-3-4 strands
Cap: both mushrooms are about the same size, 1-3cm diameter. Difference is color and structure GMTx: copper-golden tan, dark spot in middle; convex/conical/hemispherical Mystery: chocolate-copper-tan; conical/cylindrical/campanulate
Spore print color: GMTx: dark brown/purple/black; I had a light print look a lil rusty though... Mystery: rusty brown... Only light prints, will take more
Bruising: Both mushrooms immediately turn darker peach as handled. GMTx will slowly show blueing over a few hrs, eventually drying blue-grey. Mystery, it's hardy to tell, it doesn't ever look like its blueing, but after they dry, grey stems look possible blue tinged...
Other information: Ok, again to clarify, I am asking if anyone can help ID what I've been calling "Mystery", it's growing in the middle of an unintentional patch I created, and to me looks slightly but noticeably different than the proven active "GMTx" of the patch. What are the "mystery" mushrooms? Could they be a different "colony" of one of these similar (possibly cross breeding) active species, just intermixed? Does this happen? Could they all actually be the same, just happened to grow diff? Does this resemble any particularly dangerous poisonous species? What about edibles? If so, can they taint the good part of my patch? I always thought most fungi were pretty competitive, that multiple species in a single patch would compete for resources, and eventually only one would dominate... Unless the species were closely related, such as azurescens & cyanescens, or maybe galindoi and mexicana, I've heard these may be found growing together, but that it's a daily rare occurance. But then again, I've also hear that cyanescens may grow side by side with deadly gallerinas, which scares the shit outa me. Idk my pnw native, as I am not a pnw native...
Anyway, just want to know what's going on in my patch. Do I need to really pay attention to these mystery guys? I don't like that they look so similar but are all mixed in.... Is this of the Mexicana tribe? Is it a common garden mushroom? What if one of these mysteries got mixed up in my GMTx?
