Light is useful for spotting thin mycelium, I do that too.
Yeah and even a small hand-held magnifying glass works great. I use a small LED light and my 40x magnifying glass.

That's a great idea! I have a jeweler's loupe that I can try.

i suppose i could make another thread on this but , here was a salvaged piece of the bags that were thrown out

really thought the lc was done for so had this as a possible back up if they came through.
opened the spawn and didnt think it was cobweb, but looking at the photo is looks like a contam -
maybe thats just the thin portion

Some of it does look suspiciously grayish but that could be the lighting

Well, out of 5 one pound bags, 2 look really good. 1 I can actually see very very wispy mycelium with a 25X jeweler's loupe. 1 was colonizing only in the middle, because I didn't mix it when I inoculated, so I mixed it today. And 1 that I inoculated just in the middle and mixed 4 days ago doesn't show anything I can see yet. I'm not too sure I like working with lion's mane mycelium. Because it is so hard to see at first and I'm not experienced at all it makes me really anxious! I have a pink oyster LC syringe from Sporeworks coming, hopefully my rye berries from Outgrow are still good after siting in the fridge for 6 days. Next time I will order the syringe first and wait 3 days to order the rye berry bags. All of the post I've seen says that Sporeworks is super fast, but not in my experience. The 2 times I have ordered, it took at least a week each time to get my order. I still think they are a great company though. I just have to plan better. Anyway, I hope the pink oyster is easier to see when colonizing.

These bags aren't doing so well. I got two of them to colonize pretty well and used them to make two fuel pellet bags. Of the other three, one looks like it's trying to do something but not really consolidating too well and the other two don't look like they are doing much of anything. It's been almost a month now. Guess I'll just let them sit. They aren't contaminated so..... I got the bags of wheat berries from Outgrow and they looked a little dry. I wonder if it's a moisture issue. Really disappointing.

Since I don't seem to have much luck in growing my own grain spawn from LC and pre-sterilized grain bags, I just decided to order premade spawn. With the LC and bags it was right around $60 for 6 one pound bags. I just ordered 5 pounds of pink oyster spawn for 43.50. Why was I trying to make my own!?!

Presterilized spawn normally has issues even when done correctly. Sterilization isnt complete, it just gives us enough time to colonize it before contams kick in. With shipping time and all the handling the spawn goes through I wouldnt be surprised if it always arrived contaminated.
Get a pressure cooker and do your own grains, use them immediately out of the PC the next day when they are cool, always use flame sterilization, always use a SAB, and bleach bomb the room if you have mold issues.
Its amazingly cheaper to do your own and not too difficult unless you plan on making 100's of pounds of spawn for a massive grow.
Making grain jar lids is a pain in the ass though
