Hearthstone
    #21835122 - 06/21/15 01:24 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Anyone else play?  I just recently installed it and have been giving it a go.  I've never played any card games except the ones that are built into other games like Gwent in Witcher 3, and magic the gathering was popular with my younger brothers generation, where as I played AD&D paper n dice.

Since I just started I'm still trying to get a good grasp of stratedgy and what class I like best.  I was using the mage quite a bit since that was the class it forced me to pick in order to do the tutorial and solo base quests to unlock others.  After getting my ass handed to me quite a few times in play mode tho I decided now its time to switch it up and start making custom decks.  Im still using the dek builder helper but not as much as before.

Trying out druid currently and so far I really like it.  I dig the hole extra mana crystal and innervate cards, but I swear the game is rigged sometimes with the way cards get drawn.  Ticks me off sometimes when I get nothing but insanely expensive cards on intial draw, I mulligen some for new ones, and just get MORE ulttra expensive cards, even though my deck is SUPER heavy in 2 and 3 crystal cards.  Then near the end all of the sudden there is my innervates and wild growth or wharever its called.

Anyway If anyone plays and wants to add me on thyeir battle.net friends list my name is mndfreeze#1584.  Not sure if the # sign needs to be there or not, but thats how its displayed on my phone.

I'd love some advice, tips and tricks anyone might have for a new player.  Especially little quirks or special things not mentioned in most guides or websites.

Anywho,

JOBS DONE.

I played it for a while but I got burned out on grinding out arenas and play mode to farm gold to grind out all the cards.. and then they constantly are coming out with expansions and new cards with each expansion. If you don't pay money to buy packs, or play constantly like some people.. it's hard to have all the cards, which you need if you want to build good decks or at least be competitive with other players. There are a few decks you can build with mostly basic/common cards.. I think zoo warlock and frost mage? are relatively easy / quick to get all the cards for. Most decks however, have a lot of rare cards and new cards from the new expansions.

The prebuilt deck builder is pretty much worthless and only for noobies just starting out. After that you want to start building your own decks, or modeling them after popular decks.

I actually just watch twitch streamers play hearthstone now.. I get more enjoyment from that then actually playing myself lol.

Anyway I could give you some advice but I don't want to type out like 5 pages. Most of the game comes from trial and error... you'll pick it up.
The best way to learn IMO, is just watch some popular streamers on twitch. After watching 10-20000 games or so, you should have a pretty good idea of the different styles of play and different styles of decks, and how to get the most value from your cards, when to attack face vs. attacking their minions etc.

It's a relatively simple game to pickup and play, but it can get pretty advanced for high level plays.
But that's my advice to learn some advanced stuff. Watch some of the popular streamers. Some streamers don't really talk much... others talk a lot and will explain the thought process behind pretty much every move.. so you get a good idea of how stuff works in what situations and whatnot, and the optimal way to play etc.

It's hard to give standard advice, because different situations call for different things.. also depending on what class you are playing requires different playstyles.

But in general, you want to learn the terms.. like 'value' (the value you get from your cards.. for example using 1 of your cards to get rid of 2 of theirs.. is good value) ... "board control" (where your minions dominate the board.. and ideally anything they throw out you have an "answer" for or something to counter it), so you dominate the board. Generally ignoring minions on the board and going straight for their face will lose you the game... but that's not always true.. for example hunters pretty much always go face and rarely worry about board control... some mage decks may go heavy for the face... but other mage decks rely on board control and controlling the game. There's so many different variations of decks and classes it's kind of hard to go into specifics without looking at each one individually.

It's really all about the specific deck and class you are playing. You'll pick all that stuff up from watching streamers.. a fuck of a lot faster than you will playing or reading guides... although both are of course very valuable. I find in general you'll learn more overall from watching streamers... but once you know most of the mechanics and stuff, you mostly just get better through experience and experimentation. But you can eliminate a lot of that nooby learning curve by watching established streamers.. so I really recommend that.

Kripparian is probably my favorite streamer, he explains a decent amount of plays.. good player but just entertaining overall. Lifecoach is good and he explains everything. Trump is good and the mayor of Value Town lol. Just watch some of the top streamers for a while and you'll get a good feel of things.

One thing that is helpful is playing arena... you have to pay gold to enter it.. but you also get gold back from winning.. if you win about 4-5 games in arena then you break even in the gold usually and can play again for free. Above 5 wins and you usually make some profit in gold.

But completing an arena, you always get at least 1 pack of cards at the end, even if you lose 3 games in a row. So that's a good way to get new cards, just play arena all the time. And if you win a lot, then you can just keep playing without having to farm gold elsewhere. Arena also lets you draft a random deck, from EVERY card in the game.. so it's a good way to learn the cards. Meaning, every card you pick for the deck.. it gives you an option of 3 random cards (and they can be ANY card in the game.. provided they work for your class)... so you pick the best one of those 3 cards and build your deck that way. Arena is a really good way to learn how to build decks... but arena style play is different than constructed mode where people craft specific decks.. arena is a bit more unpredictable and random. For example in constructed you can only have a max of 2 of each certain card. In arena there is no limit... a mage could get lucky and draft like 6 Fireballs..

Your mana curve is pretty important. Hearthpwn.com is what I use for deck ideas and for help with solo content and shit.

I found a few guys on youtube that are really good at explaining things and stuff.. and actual quality as far as the videos and what not. Haven't ever used twitch, but thats a good idea too. Hit me up on steam and I can give you a lot of good info. If anyone else is interested I can compile some stuff in here for them too.

The guys on youtube are most likely twitch streamers who recorded it or highlighted their stream and put it on youtube.. at least that's a good chunk of the heartshtone videos on there.
