With the last bag of rye I bought, I also paid for lots of foreign debris, endospores, and ergot sclerotia
I do like rye, but I couldn't wait until Monday. So far I'm very happy with this bag of oats. It's immaculately clean, and the soak water came out crystal clear. I'm PCing a bunch tonight. The other thing about oats is that they seem really forgiving with moisture content, which suggests they'll be really good for LC. I'm hitting a bunch of oats with ape and PE6 LC, and reishi, shimeji, and blazei wedges tonight.

One of the tubs in my sig was done with rye, the other with oats. I like both.

Yeah I don't see too much difference in the end result, but plenty of difference in the ease of prep. My best yielding tubs so far have been with oats I think. Might just be a chronological thing.

Great write up. I think I see something other than WBS in my near future

if i ever get my hands on some i really want to try oats. but wbs is .33 cents a lb and available a mile away. nearest feed store is an hour away. one of these days.
I boil mine for 30-40 minutes. I really like to get them hydrated. I've yet to have a batch burst at all.

I soaked the ones I just loaded into the PC for about 18 hours. Inoc, I like the boiling water rinse but I did it after a hot tap water rinse just to get them even cleaner. I guess I found a good supplier because I see a lot of people say cheap oats are dirty as fuck. Mine are 17.60 with tax for a 50lb bag. Now, I do realize that the last bag of rye I got was shit. It was def a bad batch, because the one before that was super clean. I will certainly do rye again in the future for "organic" grows, but I'm willing to bet that the oats will produce every bit as good of mushrooms as rye.
Now, when I start growing edibles on a larger scale, I'll experiment with offering "organic" mushrooms grown from organic rye spawn. On the other hand, with using oats as spawn, I will be able to provide a mushroom equal in quality (and really the same) to the "organic" mushrooms at a considerably lower price. However, because of the lower price of spawn, the profit margin will be higher on the cheaper, non-organic mushrooms.

If you wanna boil oats go right ahead, it's just that the entire point of the tek is basically for people who aren't good at eyeballing stuff in boiling water.
I don't even really use this exact tek much recently since I do tend to simmer instead to save time, but, I can always fall back on this if I want minimal burst grains and a lot of time not babysitting the stove.

Oats burst for you? I can't get oats to burst even if I rolling boil for 50 minutes and let the water boil out.

Well they don't burst so much as they come separate from the outer hull. And at that point it may as well be burst.

During my research with whole oats the oats began bursting while being sustained at 180-185F. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21220179#21220179

I've yet to us hulled oats(and won't because the hull adds nutrition), but I hear they're basically like rye without the hull, so I don't see how the hull separating would be a problem and equate to bursting.

Are ya sure they're whole oats?? Even bursting some grains don't make my boiling water stick at all...

Are you... questioning the person who wrote this tek about whole oats and has pictures of what are definitely whole oats all over the first post, as to whether or not they're sure they have whole oats?

Is this real life?
Anyway, I don't test my boiling water for stickiness, nor would I be sure how to test that, but the grains themselves are just stickier than similarly-hydrated grains of rye, or at least the ones I have are.
