Man dies at the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas

Thursday, June 25, 2015

The man who died at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas over the weekend was identified by Las Vegas coroner's officials as Nicholas Austin Tom of San Francisco.
The 24-year-old was pronounced dead at the site of the three-day festival, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, said an official with the Clark County Coroner-Medical Examiner's office.
The cause of death could take up to eight weeks to pin down because toxicology tests, which could determine whether or not the deceased had been using prescription drugs or narcotics, were being conducted out of state, the official said.
The electronic dance music concert, promoted by Beverly Hills-based Insomniac Events, moved to Las Vegas in 2011 following political uproar about a 15-year-old girl who died after she took ecstasy and sneaked into EDC at the publicly owned L.A. Coliseum in 2010.
Since moving to Vegas the event has seen more than one death a year. Nearly all the victims used ecstasy (a.k.a. MDMA or molly).
Last year 24-year-old Montgomery Tsang of San Leandro, California died from "acute methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) toxicity," a coroner's official told us.
In 2014 EDC attendee Anthony Anaya, a 25-year-old from Everett, Washington, died at his hotel of "combined ethanol, MDMA and cocaine intoxication," a coroner's official said.
In 2012 EDC attendee Emily McCaughan, a 22-year-old University of Arizona student, died after falling 20 stories from her hotel on the strip and suffering "multiple blunt-force injuries." Her friends reportedly said the young woman went back to her room after believing someone was following her.
Coroner's officials determined she had ecstasy, methamphetamine (a component of ecstasy) and so-called date-rape drug GHB, or gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, in her system when she died.
That year Olivier Hennessy, a 31-year-old from Ponce Inlet, Florida who graduated from UC Irvine, was fatally struck by a pickup as he stumbled onto a roadway outside Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Coroner's officials said he had hydrocodone, marijuana and alcohol in his system.
After 2010 the event's organizers, which now include Beverly Hills-based Live Nation, the largest concert promoter in the world, tightened up security, adopted a no tolerance stance toward hard drugs, and changed the door policy from all-ages to 18 and older.
Las Vegas Metro Police said 76 people were arrested, mostly for drug-related felonies, over the weekend. A whopping 1,426 people required or requested medical attention during the festival, cops reported.
Temperatures reached higher than 110 degrees during the event, and most of the medical cases were said to be minor.
EDC isn't the only electronic dance music festival beset by ecstasy related deaths. MDMA overdoses have caused uproars at festivals and club events in New York and Boston in recent years, and it has long been associated with club tragedies in the United Kingdom.
The three-day party in Las Vegas, which included a surprise stage appearance by actor Bryan Cranston during Above and Beyond's DJ set, claims to have one of the largest main stages in North America.
About 135,000 people attended each day, promoters say.
Here's the statement promoter Insomniac Events sent us Sunday, when word of a death was first reported:
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the man who passed away. The health and safety of our fans is Insomniac's first priority and we take every measure to create a safe environment. While the cause of this tragedy will take some time to determine, we ask that you keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. Tonight and every night, we ask all of our fans to take care of themselves and one another.

At 111 degrees, I'm astounded there's only 1 or two deaths here a year. Far more people die in the heat from clots originating from their fat, sober asses. At this rate "ecstasy" is saving lives not taking them.

i feel bad for people but sometimes you have to chill on the party and take care of your body, even more so when it is hot as hell.
back when i went to 2 at the coliseum there was always people way too fucked up and getting taken to the medics, pushing it too far eventually will end poorly.

Only one death?
Sounds like successful EDM concert to me.

Me and my buddy were tripping on acid there and saw a guy flipping around, groaning, and doing snow angels on the ground in the gravel at about 2am Saturday night. I think it was this guy. It was pretty freaky to see while tripping and especially since my friend was starting to have a bad trip right before this. It's sad to hear the guy actually died.

Went only once to EDC, in 2008 at the colosseum. Ate a couple hits of LSD and some pills. Was VERY high. Watched people around me who were very high also, but in a different way. They didn't take LSD, they just took way too much ecstasy. It was scary walking past all of the faces grinding their teeth and their eyes darting all around. I was peaking and saw an asian kid on the ground seizing to the beat of the music. A circle formed around him and everyone just looked down and watched him twitch not sure what to do. The music and lights were so intense. Finally a couple guys came through and carried him out of the dancefloor and I'm assuming to a medic tent.
I was overwhelmed by what I saw and the lights and bass and went to find a curb to sit on and collect myself. Immediately somebody taps my shoulder urgently and says 'you alright bro?!?' and when I nod my head, 'yeah yeah fine' he runs up to the next guy sitting on the curb, and I look around and see multiple people checking up on everybody who isn't standing. Nice of them, sure, but a grim reminder that people are very stupidly pushing the limits here with no regard for their safety.
Moral of the story is, if you want to get higher, eat LSD, not more ecstasy. And I don't think I'd go back to EDC, or any rave. I'm too old for that shit.

Sad. You couldn't pay me to go to EDC, that festival looks/sounds awful...like a poser party designed for teenagers who want to go find some hydrocodone and bath salts and listen to shopping mall music.

i found the edc crowd to be really cool, was hippy flipping myself when there and met some really cool heads but yes, lots of people making poor dosing choices, plus people eating things they found there without knowing what they actually are/strength. the one thing that always made me cringe was the tunnels in the coliseum would get totally traffic jammed with tards all over heating and crunched up... would peep a tunnel from the side and say fuck that walk over to the next one for mellow transportation.

Yah man, its surprising. 110 degrees and rolling, you basically can't drink enough water. If i was there I'd probably drink 10 liters in 8 hrs or so

Yeah the heat is a killer if you aren't used to it.
I am sure thats probably a factor.
If you are from out of state and come into the heat for that, its gonna kick your ass.
I live in the desert where it is regularly 110-115 and just being outside for 20-30 minutes will overheat you very quickly. Imagine if you are dancing and going hard in that heat

It cools down to about 90 at night. I wore a camelbak and had to refill it a couple times throughout the night. The camelbak is key.

I was gonna come in here and be a smartass and say "just one?" It looks like two or three other people already beat me to it!
Seriously though, kudos to all the people that didn't die. I'd say that's the story. Now, if it were a massive TRACTOR PULL with 134,000 in attendance, or some other binge drinking event, I wonder how many deaths we would see. Not to mention arrests.
