using a spent cake for spawn

i had this idea and was wondering what you guys thoughts. what if someone were to get a bag of high mountain compost and take a cake that has already had a coulple flushes and break it up and through it in there to colonize. the only problem i could think of for it to not work would be contamination. the compost would provide plenty of nutriants for it to continue to grow, right? i don't think i would try this because i dout i could keep contams out and i don't want to waste compost but i'm just wondering if this could work or if there are any other reasons for it not to. could that work outdoors?

you can do that, use it to spawn some PCed jars or some small casings. Break it up, add it to a substrate and let it colonize, just dont do it over and over again cause it'll eventually degenerate the quality.

I would use fresh spawn -- you'll have a lot more success that way. What you're saying is certainly possible, but it would be associated with a high level of contamination, too.

Also I woulsd think that would make for weaker myc. in the long haul, growing from a spawn that was nearly dead. While certianly plausible, why bother? BRF cakes are almost too easy to make.
