STD etiquette?
    #21860044 - 06/26/15 01:21 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

In what circumstances would you NOT tell a partner about an STD?

A girl that I know just found out she has HPV.  She's really sad... she's saying nobody will want to date her or have sex with her now, bla bla bla.

Then, she asked me: "do you think I really need to tell guys about it?"

I really didn't know what to tell her.  I'm undecided on this one... HPV isn't a major deal for guys.  It's temporary and most don't show any symptoms at all.  It just goes away on it's own.  About 50% of guys will get it at some point in their life anyways.  It's also impossible for guys to test for it.  So what's the point of her telling future guys?
My answer to her was "I don't think it's a huge deal but it's ultimately your decision".

What would you do if you were her?  And in what circumstances would you NOT tell a partner about an STD?

I heard a ob tell my wife like everyone has hpv and doesn't even know it. It isn't a big deal at all. Did her doctor not go over that with her?

nope, the doctor spent like 2 minutes with her.  he set up a test to see if it's the cancer causing strain, then pretty much kicked her out the door.

You'd have to be an incredible sleazebag to not tell someone you have an STD.

QFT. Doesn't matter whether or not its a "big deal" for guys. You have an STD, and fuck someone without telling them FIRST, you should be killed.

I agree but do you think it's really that black and white?

What if you got herpes 30 years ago and have never shown any symptoms for the past 3 decades?  Would you say "Hey girl I caught herpes 30 years ago but I've never shown symptoms.  Is that cool?"?  or just ignore the subject because it hasn't been an issue for 30 years so why would it be an issue now?

(Hypothetical situation.  I didn't catch herpes 30 years ago.  Just wondering.)

She absolutely should be cool and tell her partners what up. From what I was reading HPV goes dormant after a couple years anyway, and then it's not contagious until it's activated again. Is 2 years of abstinence really so bad?

It looks like there is a test for guys but it's hard to find a place that offeres it, and it sounds like it's not worth the pain and suffering:

"Question: Is it true that men can't be tested for HPV? That there's no HPV test for men?

Answer: Yes and no. Although HPV testing for men is used in some research studies, HPV testing is not commonly done by doctors or in clinics. The test is unpleasant for many men - it involves using something akin to a metal nail file to scrape skin cells from a man's penis - and is not quite as sensitive or specific of a test as the HPV test is for women, as I understand it. As a result, HPV testing for men is not widely offered. Men cannot really know, then, if they carry and HPV strain or not. However, if you think you have genital warts - they can be as small as little pimples or larger and resembling cauliflower - please see your healthcare provider. They can do a biopsy or, if you'd prefer, try one of the standard treatments (such as a topical cream) to see if that works. Also, warts often go away on their own even without treatment. And now, men can get the Gardasil vaccine to help prevent cases of warts. "

Yes. Just because you've shown no symptoms doesn't mean you don't have it.

You'd have to be an incredible sleazebag to not tell someone you have an STD no matter how long it's been since you've shown symptoms.

Most people will have no idea when they get HPV. You should just assume you have it if you've had sex,

And that was the end of it.
