Outdoor grow

I have been seeing a lot of people doing outdoor grows and thought why not try it.
I have a few spent cakes and some jars that got contaminated. I am thinking of taking some hpoo and mix it all together and cover with a tarp.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

What type of climate do you reside in?

If you're in plant hardiness zone 5 or below do it ASAP - you're running out of time. If you put your bed in a shady spot and keep it from drying out you don't need a tarp. Aged horse manure is the best bulk substrate. If you have to use bagged manure compost I would recommend adding something like coir (and/or vermiculite) to make it more airy. The store bought stuff seems a bit too gooey straight out of the bag, but that's just my opinion. I get best results from first inoculating some sub in a tub and using that to inoculate the outdoor bed. You only need to colonize the tub long enough for the mycelium to establish itself, usually 3-5 days. If you're just going to make a small bed you can skip the tub, I guess. It has worked for many others.

in a shady spot is fine . I would recommend covering it with something if you're in a shitty hardiness zone though. I've heard of people using kiddie pools too haha.

They are Puerto Escondido cubes. Watered with the hose and topped with a flipped kiddie pool.

Those aren't mine haha. Just saying that there's others in shitty zones who have done it. They too seemed to benefit with something covering them. I use a tarp.
In a zone 6 you really shouldn't need anything to cover it. I was talking about zone 1-4.

Do you definitely need some type of sub to mix it with or can you just bury it in the dirt?

Do both! Mix it together in a hole, then cover with loose soil and leaves you'll get an epic patch too.

Other people have had success just burying spent/contaminated substrates. But if you want to maximize your yield you I would recommend the procedure I described above or at least mixing it at a 1:1 ratio with more sub. Outdoor beds from spent/contaminated substrates are a gamble anyways, so when it comes down to expending effort and money you first have to ask yourself
