how do you guys go about disposing of badly, and i mean badly contamed jars. I know they should be opened outside, not breath in the air, etc, but would pressure cooking the jars also work? i would prefer to kill the mold before opening the jars if at all possible.

I've never really had any problems from opening my jars, I just go outdoors and dump them all out.... Really isn't anything special. If you're that concerned, get a doctors mask so you dont breathe in the fumes.

I inject mine with bleach and let them sit overnight before opening.

Best way to destroy most of the mold spore is to pressure cook it. Do it if you mind and have fun taking your revenge on em...

i used to just open them and dump them outside, unless it is an aqueous contam. then, i put it in the freezer overnight, before dumping it outside. that way it comes out in one whole "contam cube."

If they are only lightly contamed..no problem... but if the whole thing is covered... I just pitch the jar with it....

If I have a jar that is really super contaminated then I toss the contents in the bushes at the back of my property. If there is some decent mycelium growing in there with just some green mold or cobweb, then I cut off the contam and bury the rest in my compost pile. I've gotten some good shrooms off of that pile of last resort.

take a 5 gallon pail, fill it with water, and add a couple cups of bleach. hold the jars under the water as you open. all mold/bacteria spores are killed before they enter the air, IF they make it to the air.. just holding your breathe would seem to work, but the spores/endospores remain airborn a LONGGGGG time. plus, if your doing the jars indoors, why risk the spores floating thru the place where your going to be trying to do more sterile work..... using the underwater trick helps ensure a cleaner "workplace"

pff, the kind of contams that live off rice/rye/straw, whatever, are not the kind of thing that can infect a human from a distance (except certain strains of Aspergillus, and only if your immune system is seriously compromised) As long as you don't EAT contamed substrate there's nothing to fear, except maybe a bad smell.....AFAIK

To answer your question yes. PCing them would kill them first. I suggest it.

at the right time of year I put mine bunk jars outside under the grass and guess what(this wont come as a shock to 95% of the shroomery members) Mushrooms pop up! in.............. BC CANADA I'm playing god over in my neck of the woods I say put them under ground always, the worst that can happen is nature will do its thing and kill the bad stuff or it will finish ITS job which is to rot the substrate things will be broken down and put back in the earth and the best thing that can happen is you will get mushrooms in yor yard Watch out for slugs though they happen to love cubies!, I NEVER ate ONE of my outdoor cubes cause they never got big enough before the slugagedon and then it got to cold. I was right about to bring out the big guns to! egg shells soaked in salt water I took one slug that had eaten a FAT pin all to himself(the pin was ultra blue on the inside to) and I put him in a spoon and flicked it like there was no tomorrow sending him into a pool yards away........"YA theres your trip you fucking slug!, and tell yor friends to stay away frommy happy plants as well, fucking punks" I thought to myself

i explode small thermo-nuclear devices over any contaminated jars,it sends the contams on the fast train to fuckedville. problem is,sometimes the jar lids melt. seriously now,i've never had any manky contams, but i'd either inject them with bleach or submerge them in bleach making sure the inoculation holes were upright, allowing the bleach in. if you do use bleach,be sure to be very thorough when rinsing them afterwards...any bleach residue is probably going to result in poor germination of spores and failed jars.
