My first attempt at growing shiitake.... from a kit

Hey guys, my first time posting in the gourmet section of these forums and probably won't be my last... Wait, that sounded weird, but anyway I bought a shiitake mushroom grow kit from an online supplier about 2 months back. It's one of those kits that basically comes looking like a cinderblock-sized block of mycelium and tells you all you have to do is refrigerate for a few days, dunk for a few hours, and mist periodically after placing it into a plastic humidity tent(bag) with holes in it. Well, long story short it didn't work out on my first attempt (waited almost the whole two months for any sort of pinning), so I "restarted" the process by poking holes in the damn thing and dunking it for almost 24 hours. Now, much to my surprise, only 3 days later I'm getting shiitakes sprouting out of my ass! (not literally...) I'm actually really excited as this thing was rather pricey and I thought I had bought a dud or something. Not to mention I fucking love shiitakes and they cost a shit-ton to buy in stores, so
I gots me some pics for ya'll to look at, and I'd love to hear if any of you have used these kits or similar commercial methods of growing. Also, for the future, will I yield more if I use other methods like RogerRabbit's pf tek? I just tried my hand at growing Psilocybin cubensis with his method and have had fantastic results!
Here's the whole cluster of mycelium, with the humidity cover on

And without the humidity cover:

Close-up of a cluster of shiitakes, please excuse the lack of focus it was an awkward picture to take

And my second biggest mushroom (The biggest one I've already harvested)

Congrats man! I started back up recently with a grow kit of blue oysters. Make some WBS jars and transfer some flesh into them to continue the grow! Good luck with getting into the hobby!

Thanks! I just ordered some maitake spores, and I'm thinking about growing some oysters and other gourmet mushrooms. Does anyone know if morels are easy to cultivate? I've always wanted to try those...

The pF tek is definitely NOT RogerRabbits.
Yes, its in his video, but only included because its a popular and "easy" method of growing mushrooms without sterilizing. The pF tek was invented and popularized long before RR's movie.
Commercal shiitake production is pretty much the block method your working with now... You'll get way better yields from a large production block then small cakes using pF.
Obviously there are many factors involved with great yields - like strain, environment, ect. so don't be bummed if your not pulling great results off your "grow kit".
If your looking for a relatively hands off, easy method for shiitake with good yields - plug some logs. Maitake and oysters can also all do well plugged into logs.
Nice avatar bytheway.
