wtf?! penis envy?! I don't have no penis envy! 1

Well the fact I got outdoor cubes in a zone 2 climate is a miracle in itself. Tarps for the win! Nights can get below 40F. It's really fricken dry. Atm my rh is 13%. The environmental factors obviously made them look different, but why do they look so close to PE?
Anyways here's to my contamination pile with no penis envy making penis envy
2 days ago:

Picked today:

Seriously can't get over how heavy they are too.. 1459 grams wet.. holy shit right?
biggest dick
 6 mushrooms
UPDATE July 1st
I seriously wasn't expecting to have an update in such a short time.. haha where to begin..
Those fuckers took forever to dry. Here's dry weight and my biggest fake dick. Starting to think I like dry cold climates..
I've never had mushrooms dry to 10% weight. These ones are almost exactly 10% haha.
Here's the tarp patch today :P

Also for you mister eat and for science, check out the patch I made by a tree. I put it in the tallest grass there. NO TARPS. I parted the grass and dumped my used/contaminated subs in it then folded the grass over it. Here's the pics. Not PE looking . Still hella dry looking though. Guess that's what you get in zone 2 open air haha.

Another one I picked from this patch 2 days ago that's cracker dry:

Now I'm really baffled why they looked like PE.
UPDATE July 12
Another great update! check out what the EXACT same spot as the PE made. (2nd flush) they came out normal! I didn't water them at all and we got barely any rain. Just kept them tarped as per usual haha. Well they're still really cracked from too dry, but they are AMAZING! Check it out!

Another 636 grams
July 22
You can see the tarp in the background

Ever seen a heavier cluster? :P and so begins the shitty drying process. first world problems.
Seriously though. Why did the first fruits look like pe and now they don't?

Did you set out to make an outdoor bed or just bury some contaminated cakes? Living in a zone 3 this gives me some hope.

Yup I feel the zone 2 pain as well. People telling you to "just bury it outside man". Fucking makes me so jelly. Nice results tho, I loved the ones that I lucked out with last year.

I just put my contaminated subs in a pile. I don't even bury them. Threw a tarp over it, and voila! Good luck man it's apparently possible in harsh climates

Dude, you're so right. Zone 2 problems!! I'm so jealous of the people with pans or wood lovers out their front door, or constant cubes coming up all year round. I'm just thankful I even got anything haha. Here's to zone 2 people making it work

I didnt think of that! So basically... 1) make a bunch of scattered piles with contaminated/used substrates 2) water twice a week and tarp them 3) ???? 4)

I think they can survive about any climate once the substrates is colonized. I mean it's just a mass of mycelium with a crapload of stored nutrients. They just needs a window to grow where there's enough moisture available and the temps are reasonable part of the day.

I would, but it's pretty old considering it's a pile that's been around for a few months. I have younger cultures that are more worth the time . Also they did this because of my environment. If I were to clone it, it'd still look like regular cubes indoors. I know this because the pile is made up of regular old cube varieties that make normal cubes indoors. I wish it would make PE from now on though.

Would you prefer too hot or too cold? Because here we have both most unstable climate ever. Winters can go down to -40 without windchill. Added windchill, and you might as well go to Pluto. Right now it's pleasant though, and probably too hot in Florida . However in 6 months I'll be envying you man.

No soil used. Seriously just took my contaminated/used manure subs and threw them into a pile in open air. Tarped it and watered twice a week.

Not when its -40F and I got 4 feet of snow on the ground. This spring we had zero rain, was pretty much 1% RH. Even this last week we got a bit of rain and its still so dry, that shit dries out nearly instantly. Course the 20-40 km winds that are almost constant don't help. I have put taped up monos outside and had them dry out in 2 days.

Difficult. I really don't do it much. Maybe if I need space or a tub I will toss a sub under clear plastic and try to keep up with the misting. But my houses central humidifier is busted which ain't helping either.

Did you add any spent contaminated substrate to that pile since the Spring thaw?
I try to prepare new outdoor beds every year. If you got those to winter over in Zone 2 I'm going to have to change my MO.
And to Pastywhyte: The more snow the better - it's good insulation from subzero air.

I'm a fellow resident of canadia Yes, Canadia.
That sucks though. I'm doing my first open air tray and it just started to pin probably 2 days ago. A couple were starting to crack on the cap, so I guess I wasn't misting enough. Now I'm using an entire spray bottle on the tub everyday.

Haha canadia eh buck? For outdoors I used a watering can. Misting would be such a hassle.. how do you not get sore fingers from it?! XD either way good luck! Pinning always a good sign
Coffee, I moved here last October. It was basically winter, so I waited for spring to start up after 2 long years of no growing. So essentially this pile is all from March onwards. You'll have to wait for next year to get my verdict on snow.

Yeah I'm ambidextrous so I just swap hands lol.
These pins are fat as hell so I'm hoping it'll be kick ass. As of now my humidity is about 70-80% but its been raining some lately. So I can only imagine fruiting in 1% rh. Usually my house is pretty dry though like 20%

Haha rico, for 1, there were no pe spores used. Ever. I have the same cultures indoors, and they're all just normal cubes. They look like pe because of the environment. Like pasty said, the majority of spring was 1% rh. Only the last week we had about an hour or 2 total of rain.
For #2 though, I believe that is why they're so thick and massive.
Haha tarp tek. Too funny. I'm still planning on making tons of random piles with tarps, so we will have to wait and see how successful it is

This makes me a little more confident about my outdoor bed haha. After my monotub's second flush I crumbled it into a hole with coir/verm and cased with potting soil and covered with leaves. I read alot about manure in outdoor beds, is this necessary? Looking great btw

Manure is absolutely not necessary. I just use it because it's free and 20 steps from my front door. I bet it'll flourish! I love outdoor grows. They're generally way better too.
Thanks man. They're really cracked from being dry, but overall I'm quite pleased

Thanks for the reply. That makes more sense. My outdoor Tek is way too complex for people only familiar with PF Tek and tubs. It consists of:
1) Putting some inoculated sub in shady place outdoors. 2) Keeping it from drying out.
But at least all of that effort has paid off:

Looks like I'll have to make a tek for yall haha. Aero it was simpler than that haha, also nice fruit:). But that is what I'd do if I was spawning to an outdoor bed.
Step 1: find a discreet place in some tall grass. My new location for a spent/contamination pile.
Step 2: take any contaminated trays, jars, and tubs and dump them into a big pile. Continously add to it when you get more. I don't bury my subs.
Step 3: take a tarp and cover it. Lay down 2x4s so the tarp doesn't go flying. No straw or grass used.
Step 4: be really neglectful. Water at most twice a week.
Step 5: somehow grow over a qp in mushrooms that are envious of penis envy
I swear that's all I did. Nothing fancy.

This is a great theory and explains why it works whereas burying subs hasn't ever worked up where I am.
Like pasty said, we can't just bury subs and watch it grow. Zone 2 isn't like that. I actually wasn't even expecting any from my pile. I just got lucky I randomly checked it after neglecting it for well over a week, and had mushrooms. I was shocked to say the least.

How deep did you bury them when you tried? Temperature extremes and moisture loss are reduced the farther down you go. It could possibly make a difference.

I just plopped a few inches of soil over them. The most surprising thing is finding some in the spring that apparently survived the below zero winter so that's my basis for thinking they might be able survive other harsh conditions. But I certainly don't live zone 2 either, rather zone 6 I think.

Haha no pe6 either. Majority is creeper, Ecuador, and Cambodian MS. It's really quite mind boggling they look so pe eh?
I can't take a picture because I'm not home, but when I get home I will take one for ya mister eat . It's nowhere near as sophisticated as that lol. I'd also like to point out its in a big open area with VERY tall grass all around it. Like waist high. No shade, but that's why I tarp it .
I don't live in the city. A big open field, so those winds pasty was talking about is constant. Never not windy haha. Mushrooms came up from the south and winds mostly come from north west. Good assumption that it's not a suitable climate in that direction haha. Even with tall ass grass all around.

when i do outdoors. i try and put my beds under shrubs so that when it is rainy season, the moisture accumulates under the shrubs. it keeps a nice micro climate for fruiting. even under trees. when i picked in fields back in the day(running from cows), i found some really nice patches under tree canopy most of the time. if you can find some tree canopy or shade, that would help the dryness.

Haha already 1 step ahead of you eat I've stated dumping in a new spot in some trees behind my house. Tarping it too. Although it's just a wall of trees, it's still in tall grass and shady from the east side
My house also blocks wind from the north I'll have to post pics when they're done. It'll be fun to see a comparison.

Also please check out my let's grow mushrooms thread. I'd love to get more people in on it. Everyone here is welcome and invited! http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21883425/gonew/1#UNREAD

Another great update! check out what the EXACT same spot as the envious PE made. (2nd flush) they came out normal! I didn't water them at all and we got barely any rain. Just kept them tarped as per usual haha. Well they're still really cracked from too dry, but they are AMAZING! Check it out!

You can see the tarp in the background

Ever seen a heavier cluster? :P and so begins the shitty drying process. first world problems.
Seriously though. Why did the first fruits look like pe and now they don't?

Coffee, I moved here last October. It was basically winter, so I waited for spring to start up after 2 long years of no growing. So essentially this pile is all from March onwards. You'll have to wait for next year to get my verdict on snow.
so whats the word? anything from last year? any overwinter-ers??
I bet the composting action and heat produced would help. maybe bulk out to straw, or even aged strawbale, then tarp and water. wondering though how to overwinter/naturalize a strain...

No mushrooms out of any of my piles from last year. Winter straight fucked them up. What I did do though is take the piles that were basically compost and filled with worms, mixed it 50/50 with soil from the plots I dug out, and planted 7 weed seedlings in it outside.
Here's a seedling from July 1st. It's much bigger now. I'd love to take a pic of it RN but I'm not near it right now. I'll take some later tonight.
