Flys in a bag
    #21846173 - 06/23/15 01:53 PM (9 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, so this is my problem i was checking straw bags today and found a crap ton of little just hatched flies in one, i only found them in one and i immediatly removed the bag there sealed, well there ties. Any ideas? I was thinking that maybe the eggs were in the straw possibly when i bagged it im guessing.

Pasteurization should kill fly eggs. Did you not pasteurize your straw??

Are you referring to bags of straw that you pasteurized? or are these storage bags of straw?

I found a dozen or so living larva in my rye container once.  It skeeved me the fuck out, so i thew it all away.  Although, I could have prepped the rye and sterilized it and I probably would have been okay.

Betting that doesn't kill fly eggs.
But, could one fly in after spawning?

Next time pasteurize for 90 minutes.  16 hours is overkill.

Apparently a no heat hydrated lime soak tek doesn't work.

Maybe you should try pasteurizing your straw in the future.

A cold hydrated lime soak is known to have higher BE than heat treating straw and it is used by many people.

flies could have laid eggs while you left the straw out to dry... if it only affected one bag, there may have been a live fly in the straw you put in that bag which then laid eggs. probably not a problem with your pasteurization.

You know this from experience, or are you just talking outta yer ass??

FYI, I pasteurize 8-10 pounds (dry) of straw per week. I combine hydrated lime soak with a heat pasteurization. Works perfectly...

I did some with heat pasteurization and the rest of the bags with cold and the cold straw inoculum id kicking off way faster than the heat theyre both delayed but the cold pasteurization straw was done 1-3 dad after heat and has a higher percentage of mycelia growth compared to heat which was done before.
