Removing tape?
    #2185498 - 12/17/03 04:26 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Sorry the search was down and i needed a couple questions answered. Should i remove the tape from the jars after inoculation? The jar lids i have are one piece lids and should they be tight or loosend at all. Also how long should it take to form pins on the jars after the insides are completely covered?

Tape isn't nessecary if you have the dry vermiculite barrier on top -- better off without them, IMO. There should be tiny nail holes on the lid -- no need to loosen them since the holes should provide some air exchange, anyway.

If the jar does stop growing (no sign of growth for like a week) try flipping them. If you hear a hissing sound that's the CO2 being replaced by the O2 (CO2 is heavier than air.)

Amount of time to pin varies. If you're fruiting them in a fruiting chamber it could take up to like 2 weeks, but if you're growing them in the jars themselves just expose them to light from the time you inoculate them and they should pin fairly quickly -- possibly even before they're completely colonized.

^^what micro said sums it up nicely.
Personally, I leave the tape on the jars until the myc has colonized a bit. Then I remove it, cover with coffee filters and then flip.

Seems I have the best luck with cakes when I simply forget about them for 3 weeks or so. Its only when I find myself checking em every day or so that problems start.
