Unsure if this is mycelium...

Hey guys, kind of new to agar but have been successful with ~12 transfers and no contams so far. I had a jar of Taz on wheat that I thought was suspect due to slow, thin growth so I moved a grain to agar to check it out and possibly clean it up if necessary. It was my last jar of Taz and I haven't been able to take it to fruit yet so I want to save it. Now the growth looks different than the other mycelium I have on agar. The P-Buffalo is rhizmorphic like I've never seen in my own projects. Kind of stringy by the point of origin but then gets really fuzzy and weak looking.

Is it just weak mycelium? mold?

Is that a colonized Rye Berry it is growing out of? or did that mass form while culturing?

That's a wheat berry taken from the suspect jar

hmm, don't take my word for it but I'd guess cobweb. Looks too wispy to be myc IMO

That was my thoughts but I wanted a second opinion. Damn, I was hoping to be able to clean this up. Oh, well...

as rbalzer said don't take my word as bond on this either.
If that is just a pp5 container with no nutrients other than that wheat berry, I would be surprised to see Cubensis mycelium spread so robustly and evenly. It doesn't look right. can you post a picture in different light that is less blurry?
How did you remove the wheat berry? You just opened the lid to a partially colonized jar and plucked it out? I hope to god your tweezers were PC'd and you did it in front of a flow hood. or in a SAB....
Very interested to see what the big dogs say about this one

It's on agar in a pp5 glad container. PDA, actually. It was transferred in my SAB and every other transfer I have done in the same manner has come out clean. I'm not worried about my procedure as much as the original jar.
It was a small knife that was sprayed with alcohol and then flame sterilized just prior. No PC though. It has worked thus far with agar to agar and print to agar so I guess I'm just being a little lazy. The jar was shaken and the berry wasn't so much as picked as "nudged" out of the jar onto the agar.

If it was my culture. I would transfer to a new clean plate and see what becomes of it. I hope you have other irons in the fire. Diversify your bonds.

I do, I actually have more tubs going than I do space at the moment. I just don't trust what I see yet when it comes growth on agar. This is just for my own personal education.

How fast did it grow like that? If it was really quick, then it's most likely cobweb. If it took it's time and is about the same as the other cubes, then it might be okay...
I've seen a few pics on here of mycelium that looks kinda like that.

I've seen lots of vert that looks like that.

Experience trumps book knowledge most the time, at least in my opinion.
I really want a scope....
This is all correct. I have a perfect example.

So it goes without saying that this plate is totally fucked, but only the area directly at 12 o'clock has any cube myc in it. The rest is all vert. This is a side effect of having too many plates going. I didn't even notice this until it was too late to transfer.
The untrained eye would probably think this plate is okay because it's white, but trust me. It's nearly all vert.

I was afraid of that. Anyone have any comparison pics of vert on mea versus cube myc? I must be missing something.
vert is top left, healthy cube is bottom, both on one plate is top right

Still I'm not a pro. What do I know? However I wouldn't use that.

Thanks guys, it grew at the same rate as my "known" mycelium but I still believe it is some form of vert due to the fuzzy nature of it. There are no "strands" except for those few near the rye berry. Those could be cube but as you get out further the growth looks more like peach fuzz and isn't one connected mass.

Looks like mold to me. Mush myc tends to be dense and slow progressing. Rhizo's look like bright white wire brushes. That looks fast moving and whispy, the mark of an oportunist not a specialist
--------------------
I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...

Thanks guys, a little disappointed but right now I just need my eyes to get more confident in what I'm seeing and I appreciate the help.

UPDATE:
I didn't transfer that agar but I got great results with the jar that this plate was started from. As I said above, one colonized berry was removed from the "suspect" jar and the jar was used to make more jars that were then used for a monotub. Clean or not I just pulled the fourth ounce out of it and it is barely into the second flush. Beautiful!
I do believe based on further growth that that plate was definitely contaminated. I believe that the jars themselves had a bacterial growth in them but I find it hard to beat myself up over something when it still produced a great crop.

I do the same thing often with pin mold. Little pin molds show up all the time, always isolated on pieces of sub that stick out. Never got sick because of them.
