How do you get better at guitar?

Hi guys. I've been playing guitar sort of off & on for approximately a decade now. Lately I have been only playing maybe 2 or 3 times a week for about 30 mins or so at a time. The thing is I've never really been that good at all. I don't even consider myself mediocre. I took lessons for about two years when I first got my guitar but after that I stopped taking them because felt like the lessons weren't helping me get any better. After the lessons I started trying to learn songs from my favorite bands. I soon found out that a lot of the songs I wanted to learn were way too difficult/complex so I stuck to learning songs mainly with power chords. Songs by bands like Nirvana, The Misfits, The Ramones, etc.
I know how to play bar chords decently, I know all the "cowboy chords"-E, A, D, G, C, F, etc. I know the pentatonic scale, & the blues scale but I don't have a clue how to put all those things together into a song or some sort of little riff/jam. I can't improvise or put chords together without it sounding bad or like it doesn't go together. I have no music theory knowledge or anything like that. I don't want to play lighting fast or shred I just wan't to noodle around on my guitar or put some chords & a scale together. How do I go about doing this? Is there things I need to learn first? Where do I start?
Wow I sound like a huge noob. Thanks anyone who can give me some advice or tips.

Increase the amount of time you dedicate to the instrument. Many of the rock greats would play til their fingers bled when they were first learning guitar.

learn a lot of songs with similar styles you want to write, Build up your knowledge of how other artists write their guitar and practice more often. Try researching Music Theory, i don't know jack shit about it but the little bit i do know goes a long way. Perhaps a beginners music theory book? I love to mess around with triads, it's a nice break from all the power chords or chords at the far end of the neck. Also, try listening/playing to some backtrackings of drums and bass guitar if you're feeling creative. Bottom line is practice practice practice, till you come up with little progressions yourself and expand on it.
