How long does spawn keep for?

I just received 40-50 pounds (one case) of oyster spawn from amycel. They shipped it Monday morning, so it spent two days in transit. The case is sitting inside of my basement right now, which is the coolest area of the house by far (63-65 degrees F). I won't have time to pasteurize all of my straw until Friday and I just want to make sure this stuff will be good until then. The case has a sweet smell to it and I notice there is some condensation along the edges of the bags. It's a very dense substance, more so than I was expecting. I think they use millet.

Isn't that smell awesome? I love the smell of oyster spawn.
It should be fine for a couple days.
I've had bags with pins growing. I just broke up the grain like normal and mixed it into my sub. They did just fine. Oysters are very forgiving.

i have heard 6 months in the fridge. with your case, as long as it didn't get heat killed or contaminated in transit, you should be fine.

What did you end up paying after shipping?
And is it in one big bag or several smaller ones?
Edit: It'll sit for a long time and still be viable. Supposedly yields go down after long periods of time but I never noticed a difference . However, let it sit too long and it'll be hard to break up. Until the end of the week is no big deal at room temp

81 dollars for the case which I believe is 40-42 pounds + shipping via UPS ground from PA to ME. It appears to be in two bags, but I haven't completely taken off the cardboard yet to see. I'm going to begin straw pasteurization tomorrow and see how many 3 foot logs I can get out of it. I have gusseted poly tubing and nongusseted, not sure which to use.

I have the ~10" diameter (non gusseted?) tubing and I really like it. I wouldn't make logs much longer than 3ft with it though. It'll get too awkward to pick up and move. At 3ft it stays nice and tight, even when carried on your shoulder. If you have equipment to handle, and pack, larger logs I guess it's no big deal but I have long arms and packing 3ft is annoying as it is.
I want to build a mixing table with a hole cut in it and have some sort of sheet metal collar and clamp to hold the tubing open and restrict the bags movement on the other side. Then have some sort of packing ram to compress it as I load. That way I don't have to get all down inside it to pack it with my hands. It would make the whole process much faster and convenient.
$2 per pound isn't bad considering aloha wants $55 for 10lbs shipped.

Use a ventilation duct reducer :

A clamp is more difficult but try a cut down spring-form baking pan

Ah thanks solarity! I may be making a trip to the hardware store this weekend. If I can get the right diameter reducer, I may be able to just pinch the tubing between the reducer and the plywood for now to hold it in place and open. I'll be keeping an eye out for one of those pans. I have never seen them before.
In that last pic how are the 2x4 side pieces being held in place? Is it just from the tension of the plastic?
Do you disassemble and reassemble each time using a fresh piece of plastic? It also looks as if you are sanitizing it?
Edit: Also, nice circle! Did you use a jigsaw to cut it?

2 x 4 was all screwed and glued into place. Covered with plastic stapled down, the white surface material laid on top. yes jigsaw for the cut out. Just bleached the whole lot after a run. This sort of tin. Size to match the outlet which should be as big as possible. You might need to line it with a cut up sheet of silicone (eg a silicone baking sheet!) to get a good grip.

That will work out perfectly because I have a good length of 3/8" by 6-8" gasket material just laying around. When I get the time to build this I'll be sure to take pictures and share. Thanks again!
In a few months hopefully I'll be asking you about your sauna steamer set up. I am tired of spending all day cycling the PCs inside for just grain.

Is there anyway to tell if it's still viable?
I still have 5 pounds from the first bag, and the second bag hasn't even been opened. Expecting sunshine tomorrow so I would like to get the rest of my straw pasteurized and inoculated. But I'd hate to waste all that time if the spawn is no good.
The spawn left amycel last Monday morning. It arrived at my house Wednesday, and it has sat in complete darkness @ 60 degrees ever since. The sweet smell is less apparent, but everything else appears the same.
And my basement is very clean, but I never resealed the first bag. It was exposed to the air essentially. Is this okay?

What system do you recommend for compressing the straw?

I use very finely chopped straw so it packs easily, as the bag was taken off and tied I squashed it another 10%. I should point out this set up was a few years back but it worked fine

I dunno if it helps but I've had spawn of cubes for several months with no loss of quality. I have noticed drier spawn keeps better, but requires rehidration before use.
