The Fishing Thread

Alright guys, here's the deal. there are users here from...well, all over. Some fishing knowledge is more or less universal. every fisherman knows how to tie a hook for instance. In this thread, i want to talk about regionally specific techniques. I haven't the slightest clue really how to fish for muskie for instance. But i would like to catch one someday. I've never fished the amazon for peacock bass, but if someone has, i'd like to know what they had tied on. even better, i would like to know what was in their bellies. get the idea?
tl;dr i use mackerel to catch white seabass and win jackpots on party boats(and so can you!)
Ok, I'll start. If you are fishing near the coast of Southern California you could get into white seabass at any time. This is why i always make sure to use a bait rig (it has several tiny flies on it with tiny hooks for catching sardines, anchovy, tomcod, and other bait)to catch a few small mackerel(greenbacks)and toss em in the bait tank. on party boats this is easily accomplished when they load bait at the bait receiver. theres always mackerel breezing around the bait reciever. anyway, if someone hooks a white seabass, immediately wind in, and rebait with one of your small mackerel(6-9 inches). even better if you can have another rod set up with bigger lead, you can just switch out quickly.(i typically would use a reverse dropper loop with 6-8 ounce lead) drop it straight down to the bottom. you might get bit on the sink, so be aware. White seabass much prefer the mackerel over an anchovy or even a sardine. plus, your small mackerel will still be somewhat larger than any sardine in the tank. Bigger bait= bigger fish in this case, though that is not always the case with all fish. when you get bit, he's gonna run a bit, but not like a tuna(directly away from the boat) or a bass or grouper(straight to the bottom or into the kelp) instead, the white seabass will run a short distance away, and then begin circling the boat. This is the tricky part. you have to be ready to call out "coming over" or "coming under" as youre weaving up and down the rail. Be assertive, and be careful, and don't wait for permission, just go over or under as necessary. get the deckhand's attention early, and let him know its a big fish. tell him its the jackpot for sure. this will help alot when you come around the front to the anchor. the deckhand is gonna want to take the rod to pass it around the chain, just give it to him, he'll hand it right back. you don't wanna go for a swim. when you get him alongside the boat, swim him in figure eights, and don't let him have any slack to shake the hook with. give the deckhand good opportunity to gaff the fucker and you'll be golden. any white seabass of size will take the jackpot 90% of the time on a half day boat, and thanks to your larger bait, you have the other 3 guys who caught one beat.
ok, now your turn

thats cool, i look forward to it. i definitely don't know much about north eastern bugs, though i've always found wild trout respond well to gold spinners, whatever the bug situation.(at least rainbows, browns and brooks)

i prefer fishing for trout in streams. not as much a fan of trolling in lakes or soaking powerbait. in the stream, its like hunting. its similar to bass fishing in that you have to see the stream from the trout's perspective. i love gold spinners, but fly and bubble works good too. gold castmasters are another favorite or any spoon really. for the right flies, you'll have to ask around with the locals. I've been in spots where they were only biting black and yellow flies for instance.(and they really were biting boy. i was about 10, and i stood so long chest deep in a mountain stream without waders that i turned blue) for big brown trout in lakes and reservoirs, you can try fly-lining a mouse at dusk. that's the time. don't put the hook through the mouse, just use super glue to stick it to its back.
i don't care much for trout fishing though, they don't have much fight in them.
p.s. nice skiff; 12 footer?

Gold spinner like a inline spinner with a gold blade? Spinner is a common name for an imago mayfly, one thats in the final stage of its life. A productive fly type is called spent wing spinner. After mayflies mate the often fall exhausted into the water as it is the end of their life cycle. The artificial flies use flashy wings to imitate the reflective propeties of a mayfly's wings spread across the surface film of the water. trout will often key into and gorge themselfs almost exclusively on these abundant flies during this stage of a hatch.
But yeh if you like spinners have you thrown any pheobes or mooselooks? also look at these mouse flies

My favourite fishing trip I ever had was going up around Eagle's Nest NM and going rainbow trout fishing! What a badass time! Plus nothing beats a fresh trout drudged in cornmeal and pan fried in a cast iron skillet right on the bank of a river...NOTHING!
