how azur gets down on straw 6

Evening ya'll ya like straw Here's another how to do but it's nothing new
If you're feeling groovy select your favorite movie And a hit from your bowl To soothe your soul
Straw time bitches.
A chipper shredder is a wonderful piece of machinery. Get on craigslist and buy one now. It shreds the fuck out of straw. Infinitely better than chopping by hand. The kind of stuff myc loves.
When you've got enough to fill a mesh laundry bag, load it up. Put it in your pot and fill it above the straw line with hot water. Now take the straw out and get the water to 160 degrees. Once at temp, Put the straw back in for 30-45 min. After that, pull it out and let it drain. An hour or so later, spread it out on a table and mix it with spawn. Then load it into bags, trays, or tubs. If using bags, seal it up and then poke holes every few inches. Once colonized, put into fruiting. If using trays or monotubs, pack it in tight. The chipper shredder gets the straw really fine so a weight is not needed. Here are a few pics. I'll load more when i have fruits. These are pink and king oysters.

Do you still pack the straw down real tight if you're mixing it with other sub's?

They're about the same size as a wife/slash girlfriend, but much heavier (hopefully) So ditch the bitch. Really though, I'm including some of the straw in your package. When you see it, you'll buy one and a shed to put it in that day. It's THAT nice. And oh so fast. And it turns hpoo balls into powder instantly.
Yes buck. Still pack. But this straw won't pop back up like hand cut straw will.

I really like this! Its nice and simple. I had heard that cubensis colonizes straw exponentially faster than other substrates. Do you know of any truth to this?

Well right now I just run the lawnmower over it. Probably not as good as the chipper tho. But I love me straw. Cheap as borscht and great mushroom food

Ya know, i always thought it was a tad slower, but when it's shredded like this, it actually is faster. Strange.

Well run that bitch over with the lawn mower. Then she won't be around to tell you to mow the yard. So you trade the mower for a chipper shredder. Problem solved

Nice write up, Az. I may have to invest in a chipper when ever I run out of my straw pellets. Straw pellets are even finer than that straw but it would definitely be the next best thing. I'm going to bookmark this for when I need it.

I usually use the lawnmower as well. A tub with a hole cut in the lid and a weed whacker does wonders too. Probably not as fast, but it works well.

I'd think shredded straw would colonize faster that whole tubes because the mycelium has a solid 5-9 inch straw to grow through as opposed to little 1-2 cm ones

I got mine on craigslist for $150. It's 20 years old and is a beast. One full size bale ($5) took about 15 min. I did like 200 lbs of hpoo in less than 20 min. You can find used ones for under 300 all day long. Will pay for itself in 10 min

Ok.. so you vacuum seal the bags and poke the holes while it's colonizing? So when you put it in fruiting conditions what exactly do you do with it?

Do you hold the water at 160F after putting the straw back in or just turn the burner off and let it ride? Covered or uncovered, so to speak.
Do you put the straw in and take it out to tease the water into getting wetter?
--------------------
I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

Small scale, either mist it in open air or put a humidity dome (i.e. plastic bag) over it and air and mist a few times a day. Yes. Vacuum seal then poke holes immediately.

No dunking the straw in and out as the water is too hot and could burn you with splashes. Once you put the weight on it, air will escape and straw will get saturated You may have to turn the burner back on after adding straw as it can lower the temp. If so, once it's stabilized at ideal temp, it will hold for the desired time without a heat source.

Out of curiosity, what is faster?
I never shredded it but was a hell of a lot faster than rice, or especially a rice flour based substrate.
Or maybe this is just the nature of bulk in general...

We always just used pasteurized straw.
It is soooo cheap and was easy to come by.
I never chopped it up though.
It makes sense though why that would colonize faster.
That's why we used parboiled rice to case or make spawn.
It ends up very airy so the mycelium will colonize it more readily.
I found it works much better than a brf based substrate which ends up much less airy.

The farm store here has half bales of hay already chopped up for $10. Your suppose to put it on the lawn and water it daily and it makes your lawn grow back. Of course, I'd rather not pay for anything

So i just pasteurized 28 half gallon jars of a different substrate. Water was at 160 when the cycle was done, so i poured it all in another big pot and threw a big laundry bag of straw in it. Time and energy saver. I'll spawn it this afternoon and post a pic

So...i mixed up a gt straw tub. In the OP i explain how to pasteurize the straw. When building straw tub, you want to do it in layers. Start with straw and end with straw. If your straw is finely chopped like mine, there is no need to weigh it down while colonizing. Just press it down on each layer. So i did 6 layers of straw and 5 layers of spawn and finished with a layer of coir/verm (just to field capacity, not heat treated). Added a casing to this tub because i prefer to case all straw tubs.

I had some straw leftover, but not enough for an entire tub. So i mixed it half and half with hpoo/verm. When using straw as an additive, layering is not necessary. Just mix it all up like you would with a coir or hpoo tub. If you have any clumps, be sure to pull em apart. No casing as i don't case non pe varieties unless they are all straw.

hmm, makes me wonder why mine are so much slower(TC)
Would coir cause this? ive also noticed that the sub doesn't get fully colonized with coir.
Also, when using straw with hpoo, would it help to pre soak the straw before pasteurizing it?

Firsttimer420, sorry dude. That wasn't an attack on you. Simply put, all the info is out there. Search my main threads. See how many times it was to ask a question. I can think of 3. One for cleaning up after contamination, one for agar, and one to identify a contam. And the last one i put a lot of effort in so others won't have to. Anyways, here's the link http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22315950/fpart/all/vc/1/nt/14 The original post is shit, but it gets very good. Read it. Don't just skim it.

Yeah FT420, you can't take anything Azur says to heart. He's a dick, but a dick that is willing to help just the same
I can say that because I'm a dick too (just not as willing to help).
I've got a batch of straw azur gave me, and I think it's the chipper that makes it so fast. The straw is absolutely beat to shit by the time it comes out of the shredder. The round hollow stalks have been completely disassembled into little shards with tons of surface area.

Check that out... that's shredded

Mush on YouTube there's a video of a guy making straw using a weed whacker. I tried it over the fall too, and if you take your time it can be fuckin sooo shredded. Almost powdery. Also everyone has weed whackers lol.
Probably more work than a shredder, and much longer, but it's a cheap solution if you don't have the funds. And it beats using your hands lol

Hey. He's only half Mexican. I think the blacks and Mexicans are in cahoots. Black guy steals my mower and sells it to Mexican. Mexican gets job mowing my grass. $50 twice a month to mow, weed whack, edge, pick up trash, and blow the driveway off. Who can argue with that. I mowed enough grass in my life.

Forget the big noisy messy chippers!
I bought a leaf shredder (Worx brand) for half that price. Essentially an inverted weed whacker in a hopper. The frame holds jumbo trash bags perfectly. I processed around 300 pounds of straw in less than half a day. Best investment ever!!

I bought a leaf shredder (Worx brand) for half that price. Essentially an inverted weed whacker in a hopper. The frame holds jumbo trash bags perfectly. I processed around 300 pounds of straw in less than half a day. Best investment ever!!
My chipper shredder was $150 used. I can do 300 lbs in 30 min

EDIT:Btw, I got a bale of straw per recommendation, and its a bitch to chop up. Tried to rent a chipper/shredder, fucking 300$ deposit and 75 buck an hour for like the first 3 hours.

Nice!! Not too many deals like that around here... You lose much to flying debris? What do you shoot it into? What I like most, about my shredder, is that it weighs under 20 pounds, packs away into a small space, and the straw shreds straight into a bag.

Yea. Those features are nice. Mine is big and heavy. And i had to build a crate type thing to catch it all. I lose such a minimal amount to blowing that it's not a concern, but not without the crate. How well does yours shred the straw? I looked at that model, but wasn't sure. Mine is a gas powered beast that will shred 3" diameter sticks if i threw em in

My straw ends up averaging around 2". A few 3"-4" pieces. About 20% is under 1/2", or powder. I pasteurize in large burlap sacs...
Not so good with sticks, so it's dedicated to straw only. We're rural acreage, so sticks, that don't end up as mulch for perennials, get burned...

I think ill switch over conpletely after i run out of coir. A lot of times i only need half a brick of coir and old coir is a gamble depending on moisture content and rh.
Them pellets can be used in exact quantites with zero waste.

Buy straw. Put on ground. Run over with lawn mower. Pick it up. Done.

I'm gonna make the switch cos I have to source the coir online (expensive) and this last batch I got is fucked up. At first I thought I was just dealing with slow clones + cold weather, but even the MS cultures I got are colonizing ridiculously slow, almost makes me wanna trash all this shit. 2 tubs are starting to pin now after 45 days, wtf? Something's up with this coir I tell ya. With straw there's no second guessing. I also get a giant bail of straw for 3 euros, ridiculous.

No mold no. they look perfectly healthy. The spawn was clean too.
It's just unbranded shit that comes in a rando box with no labels, all crammed together. Lots weigh as little as 400 grams and a few reach 650. The first time I used coir from this batch was in August last year. It was a cloned culture of Orissa India. After more than a month without seeing pins I tossed the tubs and chalked it up to genetics. But then the coir+Brf pucks I've been doing don't pin out no matter what. I think I read somewhere that sometimes coir contains added salt, but tbh dunno it this is the case. So straw is gunna be.

This is the shit I got. Last year I bought from the same vendor, and was drowning in shrooms by this month, no probelms. But this coir doesn't seem to have any control or standards so they may have sourced it from somewhere else and now it's fucked up.

ive used oxbox many times. its a great product. its a little expensive though. you can also order bales pre chopped on ebay and amazon. it does get a little sticky. so if you do use it, make sure to expand it with hot water because the plant material binder gets sticky. and use gloves to mix it up.

beginning pages of my slurry thread was using oxbox litter.

Made my first 2 straw tubs today, one layered, one mixed, now I understand first hand why they say to layer straw tubs. Being a lazy coir user I'm not used to this diabolic mess that is straw, jeez Also, dem tubs don't weigh nearly as much as a coir tub, yall know what that means...

The bruthamang's way of pasteurizing straw has always been my go-to. Easier and less messy than the tub method, also easier to get the correct temps throughout the pasteurization cycle.
I like to pasteurize for one hour though, and use a old blanket instead of a laundry bag (pieces of straw are able to escape from the laundry net).
