Why dirt bike vs snowmobile throttle?
    #21851535 - 06/24/15 05:16 PM (8 years, 9 months ago)

Dirt bikes have a grip that you twist for a throttle.
Snowmobiles have a lever of sorts you squeeze with your thumb?

How come that's the norm?

I'm gunna buy a snowmobile and install a twist grip throttle cuz it's way more cool.

That way when your learning you get to pop the clutch into a huge wheelie that knocks you off the bike.

Alright then, picture this if you will:
10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes, in my "need to know" post, just outside of Area 51.
Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thing with just a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this.
Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping...
Holy fucking shit!

Oh is it because snowmobiles don't have gears to shift?
They would still be way cooler without the thumb throttle.
So would four wheelers.

four wheelers have them too so I doubt it has anything to do with having gears

I honestly don't know, I've wondered it too. Perhaps as a way to prevent whiskey throttle since there are more people who don't know what they are doing inclined to get on a four wheeler/snowmobile than a motorcycle.

You mean they hold the throttle and shift, thus knocking them off?

You can probably get it converted for a good amount of money. Jetskis too have a thumb throttle; ATVs is also usually thumb throttle, but the banshees and race types are converted to twist

The four wheeler I rode a long time ago had a switch like lever you described.

Ever since I was a kid I wanted a dirt bike for both street and off roading adventures.

meaning you twist the throttle and the accelleration throws you back and you hang on twisting the throttle wide open

Ohh, nevermind.
They just aren't gentle to begin with and then pull the throttle even harder as they hold on.

new riders panic and get hurt because unlike a motorcycle they dont simply fall
over, a panicked rider may open the throttle more while with the thumb throttle
most will release the thumb to get a better grip on the bars when they see the
inevitable crash coming

Too lazy to look it up but how do thumb throttles work? On a twist handle you have a push and pull cable. if it's a button wouldn't that make it an electrical and mechanical interface so you'd have to do a lot of work there. You can totally do it yourself don't take it to some guy

Its the same premise as the tiwst throttle, just inverted.
You push the cable up with your thumb.

I like the thumb throttle.

Ive driven a dirt bike, and when you  are on a rough trail, i have to hold onto the grips tight to not fall off. Well, this causes a revving up and down from my tight grip on the throttle. Its annoying and hard to control the throttle AND ride on rough roads.

Snowmobiles can have similar rough riding on bumpy snow trails, so thats likely why it has a thumb throttle.

I will admit grip throttle does feel cooler, but it sucks for rough riding.
