Agar: Nutrient content
    #21849988 - 06/24/15 11:17 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hamloaf was talking about how he mixes his agar differently based on the situation. He said that he will sometimes use half the normal amount of nutritious material, because the mycelium will colonize it faster.

So if using less nutrients increases colonization times, why don't we always mix it that way? What is the point of using full strength agar if it only slows down the process?

(excuse my foolishness if this question has been asked before, but I didn't find anything with the search engine.)

Sometimes you wouldn't want quick growth.

It's beneficial to be able to observe how mycelium will act on a fully nutritious medium. Choosing the fastest mycelium when it is all stressed isn't likely super reliable.
