Agaricus - I Think?
    #21849583 - 06/24/15 09:40 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I am beginner in mushrooming. Interested only in edibles so far. I found some mushrooms in my backyard and after a lot of web research I think it is the Prince mushroom or something else in the Agaricus genus. But just wanted to confirm before consuming it since this is just my third find and a bit unsure. The first two one were morels and brown puff balls in my tiny urban yard.

Habitat:
Western PA, Pittsburgh, urban backyard, in the ground next to a path. I had dropped some homemade compost in that location.

Gills:
Pinkish to dark brown gills not attached to the stem. Young ones have a covering (veil?) which breaks away for the mature ones.

Stem:
White, about 1 to 3 inches long, solid with enlarged base. No volva - ie no egg like formation at the bottom.

Cap:
1 inch, cyllindrical for small ones, larger ones are conves to near flat upto 4inch in diameter. Brown scale like coloration on white background.

Spore print color:
Brown, picture attached.

Bruising:
It looks white to me. No change.

Other information:
I think I can smell it be sweetish. I do not have a great sense of smell. Fruit flies were all over these.

It's an Agaricus for sure.

A. augustus, "The Prince" will have a smooth stem above the annulus, and a shaggy stem below, so this is not A. augustus.

It may be something close to A. meleagris (which is now called something else, but can't remember how to spell it!).

Crush the base of the stalk (the extreme tip, near the dirt) and smell it.  Edible Agaricus will smell sweet or otherwise pleasant.  Poison Agaricus will smell like chemicals (to me, it smells like something you'd use to remove paint).

Great ID request!

Thanks for your response. You may be refering to Agaricus moelleri. Pictures look similar but in mine cap seems brown and not grey. Also, I get a very light yellowish stain when the stipe is bruised.

To me the smell is sweetish. I have to wait for my wife to be the judge. She has a better sense of smell.

My wife is my go-to sniffer, too!

I can detect the odor of the poison Agaricus pretty easily, though.  It is sometimes faint, and the smell is hard to describe, but to me it most definitely smells like chemicals rather than food.

If your wife can't detect a chemical smell, fry up a small piece.  Pay attention to how it smells when cooking, as this is reported to intensify the odor.

If you decide to eat a small piece of the cooked mushroom, eat just a very small amount (a teaspoon or two).

Would probably be best, though, to NOT eat even a tiny piece until your thread is visited and commented on by a Trusted Identifier.

Looks similar to these Agaricus I found recently. They were very tasty:

o8u That looks so much close to mine. Today we got a chance to cook it and we tried a bit of it in only (as someone suggested) and my wife immediately declared it smelled like burnt rubber. So out goes the entire batch to trash. Atleast, I confirmed my initial assessment of the smell to be sweetish was not correct. The cooked stuff defintely smells weird chemical like stuff and not at all pleasant. Sad that I thought I landed upon such an interesting find in my urban backyard.

And Thanks to all for guiding me through this one.
