Brownish slimy areas on large colinised cake - 1st time grower please help
    #21848984 - 06/24/15 05:13 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hi there, I have literally only just joined this site so please go easy if I make a mistake. I have used it for reference a lot though so am hoping the knowledge out there can save me!

my cake was looking great and white, but now after around 5-6 wks incubation has these brownish slimy spots near edges of bag and also some light blueish areas (i think these were bruising from handling inappropriately) but also noticing that there is a few darker blue pin head spots on the side of bag in places

Is this contaminated or salvageable??

You won't get much help without a pic, but it doesn't sound good. Slimy and brown sounds like you wanna toss it even before you figure it what the blue discoloration is.

any ideas folks please, it seems like such a shame to waste a large beautiful cake if i am wrong. I was sure my sterile technique was excellent too and this stuff has only just appeared now in the last week, it has been cultivating for 5 weeks before this without any discolouration

That looks pretty well cultivated, probably a mixture of dying mycelium and metabolites.
Fruit it, and if it doesn't spread or diminishes you are fine.
Worst it looks like is bacteria, and they don't tend to throw their children into the air like trich, so again, fruit it.

yeh i think i am just going to fruit it, i think maybe i left it cultivating a bit too long and the cakes a bit dehydrated. After all this stuff only discoloured after 5 wks so i would have thought a contaminant would have shown up before then or am i mistaken?

But with a cake so large how do I rehydrate without contaminating again? Should i inject sterile water with sterile syringe?
