All American 25x steroclave project. 1

So, a few weeks ago I found a deal on eBay that I couldn't refuse. An AA25x steroclave in near perfect condition for 246 bucks including shipping. I just picked it up today and boy was I excited.
I opened the box and pulled it out, and it appeared to be in great shape.

There was some cosmetic damage as well, but it was included in the pic in the eBay listing. Looks like something corrosive got spilled on it.

Then I noticed something. The gauge was loose, and the top handle was slightly bent. Upon further inspection of the gauge, I saw that the dial was damaged, and was so bent that it obstructed the needle. I pried the gauge housing apart, and straightened out the dial the best I could.

I decided to do a test run. It powered up just fine, and after steam had been shooting out of the stopcock for 10 minutes I closed it. It went completely silent. After a few minutes, I noticed the needle on the gauge was still at zero. I wiggled the stopcock and lots of steam shot out. Looks like the unit was dropped during shipping. I don't even know who to blame because it was handled by both fedex and usps.
As soon as I get paid, I'm going to order a new gauge and top handle from out-grow. Even with 30 bucks in replacement parts I got a great deal on it, and after I replace these parts it should outlive me. The worst part about this though, is having an awesome new piece of equipment sitting there unusable
I'll throw some new pics up when I get the new parts installed. I'm also thinking about ordering the weight and overpressure plug for the 925, so I could possibly also use it as a canner. More to come.

Very nice find.
I'm hoping to convert my AA 930 into a sterilizer in the coming weeks. It'll be good to see pics of the gauge replacement
You ever end up finding a decent hot plate? I'd like the option of running my AA away from the stove but damn is the 930 heavy.

Nah I ended up getting the 25x so I wouldn't need a hotplate. You can convert your 930 into an autoclave if you replace the weight with the stopcock and get the right overpressure plug. I dunno if it will pull a vacuum when it cools, but at least you can get it up to 20psi with the stopcock.

Fucking cool, Eno! The device will pull into a vacuum with the addition of the capillary tube. Your's has the old school stopcock. That's cool. Recommend that you order you a few extra stopcocks to have on hand in case the one you are rocking breaks you'll not be caught without a replacement, and production will continue as scheduled.

Yeah I might as well order another stopcock along with the new gauge and handle. I also want to get the necessary parts to convert it into a canner just for kicks. I was amazed by how fast it heated up and started building pressure, but man was I bummed that I couldn't use it right away.

My 930 and presto run well side by side on my stove but now that it's summer I can only run em at night unless I want to over work the fuck out of my AC.
Main reason the hotplate would be nice is that I could run em in the basement if I wanted and not overheat my house.
I'm looking to order those parts next month, probably from out-grow as well. Dude always hooks up my order with goodies. This the stopcock you were looking at Eno? http://out-grow.com/canner-sterilizer-parts-c-21/all-american-sterilizer-65-control-valve-p-178.html
Ham, for modifying the 930 which cap tube do I need to get? The only options I see are for the 15qt, 25qt and 41qt. You think the cap tube for the 41qt would work alright? Considering there are none for the 30qt size.
Replacing the gauge, over pressure plug and stopcock seem pretty straight forward. The only part that's confusing me is where the cap tube fits into all of this. I've only ever run canners so I've never had to deal with that part before lol

That's the right stopcock. I don't like the way the new ones look. Get the capillary tube for the 1941x/75x. The 930 is the same height, just not as wide.
The capillary tube is mainly for running them with the inner basket. It ensures that the steam flows back into the bottom of the basket instead of out the top.

You can also get the inner basket that works with the 1925x/25x.

Do I need the inner basket or can I get by without it and just use the cap tube/stop cock mod?
14qt jars fit perfectly in my 930 but with a liner I'm sure that capacity would drop
I'm sure I don't even need to mod my pc as it works great now but I like to tinker. Besides it'd be cool to have it pull a vacuum when done and stay nice and sterile inside until I remove the lid. Not to mention it should run much quieter.
Sorry for hijacking the thread, thanks for the help

Hey no worries. This is a general AA project thread
No, you don't need the basket for any use pertaining to our hobby. Its only use really is to keep stuff dry when sterilizing, which we probably don't need. I bet it's handy for syringes and shit though.

I'm jealous numero. I talked to Mike @ outgrow and he confirmed the parts he has are interchangeable. I will be switching my new 941 over to a sterilizer.
The manual to my new pc actually says it will pull a vacuum if you don't pull the toggle off when it hits 0psi, odd huh?
Even gives instructions to pry open the lid with a screwdriver lol

Well done! I bet the ability to sterilize in any room sure is nice.
I'm still chained to my stove
Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll be able to convert my 930 into a sterilizer. Did you ever find a decent hot plate Eno? If I could run my 930 in my lab on a quality hotplate I'd be a happy camper

The cadco hotplates seem to be the best according to everyone. They're pricey, and from what I can tell the much less expensive waring hotplate seems to be very solid.
The 25x is so nice. For agar and LC I set it to 4 and walk away. Keeps it right at 15 and heats up nice and slow. No boil over at all. Right between 5 and 6 is perfect for grain. Brings it up to a steady 20. I can just set the knob and walk away, and the thermostat does the rest. Such an awesome machine. I'll definitely be getting a 75x when it becomes necessary, but if I use bags I can cook enough grain for 4 tubs in one go with the 25x.
