ive seen it probably 20 times... but Harsh Times - 9/10
there are alot of reasons i like this movie. ive seen it so many times and i still enjoy it like the first time. just popped it in again and figured i'd bump this thread
its about a fucked up ex-ranger with PTSD trying to join the LAPD, but the movie really goes off the rails once he gets denied

Raw and miserable. Creepy portrayal of the nasty side of the human condition. Not for everyone, but it's definitely worth checking out.

8.5/10 something about it reminds me of the freedom when in a high school garage band.

Horsehead - 7/10 - Beautiful imagery and filming but the ending left me wanting. I understand having the audience decide for themselves how the movie ends, the symbolism of the conclusion, etc but it just felt like they realized they had already used up close to 2 hours of script and needed to wrap it up. This movie had a lot of great potential but just didn't quite "hit" it.

Pontypool. I saw it years ago but I just watched it again on netflix. Pretty solid little indie horror movie from our neighbors to the north, much more interesting than any others I've seen in recent memory. 7/10

Star Trek Renegades. I dunno, 5/10? Wasn't horrible, wasn't good. I imagine pretty much the only people who are going to look past the horrible acting are people already into Star Trek. Even then I'd say it's a toss up.
Currently trying to get through the new Fantastic Four, but it's really not much better

Buster and Billie(1974)- 8/10
This is a simple little story about an unlikely romance in 1948 Georgia. Despite its simplicity, it is quite effective in evoking senses ranging from heartwarming compassion and youthful joy, to tragic sadness.
Jan-Michael Vincent puts in a terrific performance as the popular, but free thinking and acting, country boy who falls for the shy and damaged town slut after dumping his popular girlfriend that does'nt put out unhitched. Along with Big Wednesday, this movie suits his ideal 70s character perfectly IMO. The female lead, Joan Goodfellow, also does a phenomenal job despite saying very little throughout the movie. Her expressive ability through body language represents an art rarely enacted in leading roles and is a true test ov talent. Yes just about every actor is too old for the part, but that can be overlooked for the time period.
This movie exposes the result ov traditional repression in the post wwII south, while at the same time demonstrating the ill ov morality in judgment over human character. The ending reifies the violent gang nature ov those who cant accept diversity or individuality outside their moral boundaries.
Also one ov the first mainstream movies with full male nudity, and ov my favorite actor nonetheless!

Fantastic Four, not that bad. Couldn't hold my attention well, but overall it wasn't really bad. I know everyone and their mother is out there bashing it, and I expected a total shit show when watching it, but it was just average. 6/10 I guess. Acting was decent. The plot could've used some work. Build up was too long, and given that it's a superhero movie, their chance to really shine as super heroes was nearly non-existent. It's literally like the last 15 minutes of the movie. The entire rest of the movie is just build up.

Charlie's Country (2013)
9/10
Good watch.
Quote:
Charlie (David Gulpilil), an aging Native Australian living in the Northern Territory, is broke. He does not have a house. He is also hungry and his spirits are low as a result of the erosion of his way of life. Recipient of the award for Best Actor at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, David Gulpilil is a dominating presence in Rolf de Heer's Charlie's Country, the third film in their collaboration (The Tracker, Ten Canoes). Although much of the film is improvised, Gulpilil co-wrote the script with de Heer while he was serving a prison term. Though the film reflects the actor's personal experience, its theme of the struggle for human dignity in the face of cultural marginalization is universal.
Charlie and Officer Luke (Luke Ford) have a good relationship and their banter begins the film. Charlie shouts at Luke, "You white bastards!" to which Luke yells back, "You black bastard!" The fun stops, however, when the police enforce the law preventing Charlie from hunting and fishing. They take his spear because it is considered a dangerous weapon and confiscate his gun because he does not have a weapons license. "I'm gonna shoot it, not drive it!" he tells Luke. While the police are impressed with his tracking ability, Charlie receives no compensation at all for his help in tracking drug dealers.
As he sees a member of his community being flown to a hospital far from his land, he makes a decision to return to the bush, to the ways of hunting and food gathering that he knew as a boy. While his body language reflects a new freedom, there is also a deep sadness etched on his face as he realizes he can no longer cope with the physical demands of living in the bush. After a heavy rain, Charlie comes down with pneumonia and has to be airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital, often a final destination for Aboriginal People. After he leaves the hospital on his own without being released he joins a group of homeless drifters who do nothing but drink and smoke the whole day.
After an altercation with the police, Charlie is sent to prison where his hair and face are shaven, looking old beyond his years in the film's saddest moment. All Charlie has left are his memories, especially the one of dancing for the Queen at the opening of the opera house in Sydney. Though there are highs and lows in the film, what is constant is Charlie's sense of identity and his love of his native land and traditions. Though there is a message and the film does make a strong political statement, it is not a one-dimensional screed but a nuanced look at the conditions Native Australians face and their struggle to retain their values in the face of white colonization. Marked by Gulpilil's towering performance, Charlie's Country ultimately teaches us to dance to their rhythm.

Deliver Us From Evil(the 2006 documentary)
this was pitched to me as some sort of awesome documentary. it even has 100% on RT ?!?
its actually 103 minute long youtube-quality video that is nothing but pieced together videos and testimonials. no real narrative. and honestly, i think it was too forgiving of pedophilia
3/10, for its controversial content, albeit its extremely low quality
