That Absentia will be watched when I have shrooms for it. Looks like the perfect Shroom movie IMO. Then again I suggest watching As Above So Below tripped out I don't think many people can handle that type of shit....Then again not everyone eats 100Fresh G's with no tolerance either.

if you call that movie smart then thats like such a fucking pretentious thing to say
the characters in the movie were smart, but there was nothing smart about that movie. like obvy the ai was gonna surpass the creator, they foreshadowed it so much
the twists were obvious imo
and the characters sucked too, like zero emotional attatchment to either of them. they never made it so you caref about them, both of their characters were basically souless. just completely empty
like wow youre smart, anything else?

okay then bassfreak. i'll elaborate on my pretentious opinion in that case.
i won't spoil it for anyone who may want to see it and, god forbid, enjoy it as much as i did in spite of it being completely devoid of explosions. what makes it interesting to me is that it seems to use familiar science fiction tropes (AI, sexy robots, mad scientists etc.) in order to invite the viewer to engage in philosophical thinking. the twists, expected or not, coupled with the ambiguity of the ending give rise to a paradox:
1. ava is self-aware.
2. ava is only pretending to be self-aware.
there is equally compelling evidence for both propositions if you pay attention.
the paradox raises even further questions, with the most important one, to me at least, regarding whether or not we could ever even successfully create AI because we don't understand our very own consciousness, which we would surely use as a model like nathan does in order to create ava. the fact that the story ends in paradox at all seems to illustrate the difficulties of seriously discussing AI at the conceptual level. in my view that is not accidental, and perhaps vital to the at least one of the central points of the story.
and that's just the general, scientific dimension of the story that i would assume most people pick up on. ex machina could certainly be interpreted along some other lines of critical theory. i bet really learned psychoanalytic, feminist and marxist analyses would make for interesting reading.
i suppose it's not jurassic world, but being able to present those types of fundamental questions in the form of an entertaining story with that much depth is pretty impressive to me.

I saw this movie a couple of weeks ago. My original rating was going to be a 5 or 6 out of 10, but maybe I need to rewatch it. I didn't pick up on a paradoxical ending. I kind of want to hear more from you about what you got out of it.
The reasons I'm not giving it a higher rating are because of some confusing plot elements / questionable editing. It became difficult at times to tell what was really happening and what was not.
Also, the idea that the main character was invited to the rich guy's house was the result of a lottery was not made clear in the beginning. He could have just as easily had been selected as a result of a contest, which is what I thought was happening. Like, the owner of the company issued a challenge to his staff and was awarding the winner with a meeting. Something like that would seem more in line with what a tech company would do instead of a lottery. They should have made it clearer that the guy won a lottery. They do, but much later, and really too late in regard to the story's twists. Certain twists would have been more revealing had they taken the time to set it up better.
A lot of things just didn't add up to me, but again maybe I need to watch it again.

The House of Yes (1997) - 6.5/10
Pretty good story. Neat twists. Good acting. Awful dialog.
