Ants in my brf jar.

Tonight I came home to what can only be described as a clusterfuck of ants in my brf jar. I think they may be having a party in there. I had 4 other jars of penis envy uncut in varying stages of colonization sitting right next to the tainted specimen, and they seem to be completely undisturbed. I can't imagine why they targeted this particular jar, but I'm thankful that it was just the one.

Is this jar doomed? I'm less concerned with the ants themselves, seeing as they are a natural part of the ecosystem. I am, however, wary of the possible contaminants their filthy little bodies may introduce into my formerly pristine environment. Does anyone have any experience with this? This is my first grow and I saw very little about it in the forum.
I have read that diatomaceous earth is helpful with outdoor grows, mono tubs, and the like... But I don't know how I would apply it without under these circumstances. I did give the jar a few light shakes in an effort to get them to scurry out of the jar, but they were far too stoned to flee the scene of the crime. That, or they were afraid of the flame thrower I jury-rigged with my propane torch and a can of my favorite hairspray.
Does anyone have any useful suggestions to encourage these little bastards to leave my precious PE's alone? In the future, I think micropore tape will be an adequate prophylactic.
Thanks!

So they just crawled through the holes in the top? I would assume they contaminated it but for curiosity sake I would try and kill the ants and lets the jar go....see what happens. Put the jar in your fridge or tape up the holes for a day or two. The cold or rapidly building Co2 may kill the off. I assume there just eating the myc.

Excellent suggestion. I'll definitely give that a try.

Those are 'piss Ants'.
Rub the lid of the jar with orange oil. It erases the scent trails ants use. The ants inside are gonna die(the jar will act like a trap)
I'd bet the mycelium will digest the dead ants that couldn't find their way out. High protein mushroom food.

Just to give an update for anyone that has this problem in the future...
As per denseplacebo's suggestion, I stashed the jar in the fridge for 24hrs. When I took it out most of them looked dead, but a few hearty ones survived. Anyway, I taped over the holes to prevent any more from getting in/out. There was a fair amount of condensation on the inside of the jar after the stint in the fridge, but I figured it would sort itself out.
Fast forward 4 days, the jar is now a sickly melange of bacterial infection, trich, and what I suspect to be lipstick mold. I think there may even be some cobweb in there, but it is hard to tell with the condensation on the glass. Suffice as to say, its pretty heinous in there. I have since disposed of this horrific experiment (should have snapped a picture - for science!)
Moral of the story: ants are filthy creatures, and they will fuck-yo-shit-up.
RIP jar. you will be missed.

At least it's just ants. They're pretty easy to get rid of.

Ive had a friend get them before. If i remember correctly they were after the chunks of brown rice flour.
I always put micropore tape over my holes to keep out ants, fruit flies, fungus gnats, etc.
I would toss the jar and disinfect the area around the other jars. Ants are a mobile contamination unit and should be dealt with swiftly and without mercy!
They carry a lot of bacteria and sometimes even carry trich spores.
Maybe put a small line of boric acid around your inoculating jars lol should kill those little bastards if they return. I wouldnt suggest raid within 6ft of the jars though, that stuff is not something you want to accidentally expose yourself to.

This is my first grow, and I didn't think the tape was necessary. I honestly didn't think my jars would be that enticing to pests, but I stand corrected. It doesn't help that during the summer in FL, every insect in a 50 mile radius is trying to get in my house. Never had that problem when I lived in Cali, save for a scorpion or two.
I think you're right about the brf. I can't imagine vermiculite to be that alluring to ants. Anywho, I taped up the holes after the incident, and I shit-you-not... They still got through!! Granted, the tape was not that tacky, so I think they just found a weak spot and went for it. Needless to say, I was impressed.
Anywho, I made this LC that I was excited to test out, so I inoculated a couple more jars this week. Instead of using micropore tape, I used backless bras. Lol... I get them in a 50 pack, and its basically this breathable adhesive tape cut into a bra shape. Girls wear them with backless dresses etc when they don't want to go completely bra-less.
Thusfar, they have been impenetrable. Works like a charm. Take that, Macgyver!

That is an awesome substitute for micropore! Did they fit the lid well or did you have to cut them to size?
On an off note, fuck scorpians!
