First time grow - advice/suggestions needed - pinning/in vitro
    #21847390 - 06/23/15 07:43 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hello first time grow here and I need help/suggestions on which step to take next. 28 days ago I knocked up 6 half pint substrate jars from midwest grow with GT spore solution from sponsor. Very sterile environment oven open air. I have spent tons of hours on the forums since inoculating my jars and have learned a lot along the way. But it being my first grow, I have been a bit anxious too.

Ok so i'm 28 days into the colonization and here's where I'm at with my 6 jars:

1)
first pin appeared about 5 days ago at about 80% colonization. Now many pins & fruit bodies at what seems to be 100% + 1 to 3 days. Should I birth cake and put directly into FC or just let him run wild and grow in vitro? What's the best course of action here?

2)
Cake looks about 95% colonized. I'm thinking I can let this one sit for another 5-7 days? I so no sign of pinning, except for one very large fruit body growing atop and around the top layer (shown in 3rd pic, cap). Should i let the big guy sit in there or should I pick him soon?

3)
Multiple pinning and some fruit bodies. Growth has seemed to go slow down a bit towards the bottom, but still going. If it doesn't grow much more over next few days could this be signs of contam?

4)
This one looks pretty done to me. Verm at the bottom is kinda loose. Should I let this one sit for few more days or is it ok to birth and just wash off excess verm?

5)
There's a few babies growing and this cake looks 100% ready to birth. However today I just noticed the slimy off yellow-ish type substance in the web near the top and top left (2nd pic). I'm concerned is this contam?

6)

About a half dozen or so shrooms growing towards the top of the jar. This jar accidently dropped at about 40% colonization and caused the bottom verm to be very loose. Also notice a bit of a yellowish tinge on parts of the cake but can't tell if that's just verm being rubbed against the glass (bottom of 1st pic).

I would appreciate any help, advice, suggestions on what would be the best course of action for each of my cakes/jars. They seem to be in vastly different stages of development and I'm a bit overwhelmed as I don't think there's a one solution fits all here. Also it being my first grow it's a little hard to distinguish what's gone right from what's gone wrong here. Also if any are contamed?

Thanks and any more info you need to know please ask. Thanks for all your help!

Ya not all jars are gonna be done at the same time. You can birth some before others. As for your jars, I would have birthed as soon as I saw pins. Thats what most do I think. As for the ones growing now IME the small pins will grow still if you put into FC but the big ones sometimes abort. I'd birth them and see what they do. The single big shroom I would pick if its at the top and let the jar try and finish. If you have pins some that are done colonizing I would say bacteria or something and there not gonna finish. You can cut the uncolonized part off with a clean knife. And the yellow IMO is probably just myc piss. I've had it and it didn't D anything.

Alright then, picture this if you will:
10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes, in my "need to know" post, just outside of Area 51.
Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thing with just a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this.
Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping...
Holy fucking shit!

thanks for the clarification. these were the intended courses of action I had planned to take it's nice to know that I was on the right track. just wanted to make sure before touching any of the cakes/jars. The cakes with little to no pins, should I dunk & roll those then FC? And the ones with moderate pins & fruits go straight to FC? Also I'll be out of town fri night-sat evening, wondering should I hold off til sunday to birth or just do it today. Will they be ok on their own for about a day?

Thanks again!

Pins should survive a dunk and gentle roll so thats up to you. A properly built SGFC will still need to be fanned and misted daily. Leaving it depends on the FC and how many cakes really. I use a poor mans pod(search pmp) and I leave it for days sometimes a week. Also I you wait for the ones with no pins to pin a little bit your first flush will be pretty fat. I'd probably pick what I could and then wait till I was back to birth them. I like to keep a close eye the first few days.

I'll pick the one or two large ones today. I'll let cakes do their thing til friday and then pick any that are big enough before I leave. Birth the cakes sunday & dunk + gentle roll, FC monday. By that time the cakes with no pins should have a few. You are right as I'd like to keep an eye on things during those first few days especially. Plus also gives me time to properly build my SGFC.

thank you!

I would not recommend the oven tek for doing inoculations, transfers or anything sterile, because chances are it's not sterile.

Invest in building a SAB. Avoid constructing one with the secured arm sleeves.  That would technically be a glove box and that is not necessary.
Always use fresh tyvek sleeves and those disposable latex gloves when working in your SAB.
A properly constructed SAB will always beat out the oven tek method.

Chances are its taking so long due to contamination or dry conditions in the jars.
