Can I use uncolonized substrate as my casing?

I have extra jars of un colonized substrate. I am nearing the end of my dunk period and all the stores that sell vermiculite are closed. Can I just put them in my sgfc without a casing?

I don't quite understand what it is you're doing here. pf Tek or bulk trays? leave the uncolonized stuff out. Cakes and trays don't require a casing layer, it just helps maintain humidity against the substrate

I forgot what the stuff is called that you roll the cake in after the dunk. But I'm out of germ. And have extra substrate

no no no. by substrate im guessing you mean you have verm/brf already mixed? it will contaminate within the first day and you will ruin your grow. you can leave the cakes in the fridge or dunked until you get to the store tomorrow.

I sterilized the jars of un colonized substrate in my pressure cooker. Will they still contam?

Your supposed to use straight dry verm to coat after dunking, not brf+verm.
Edit
if you coat with a brf+verm mix you are gonna contam in a jip

Just plan ahead next time and make sure you actually have vermiculite on hand before you start the dunk and roll process. As for your uncolonized cakes, if you put them in the fruiting chamber now or crumble and try to use them to cover your dunked cakes they will contam. You would have uncolonized brown rice flour out in open air ready for the first mold spore to land on and germinate.
The way I see it, you can put your cakes in the fruiting chamber now and be extra vigilant with your misting, or put them in the fridge (still in your dunk water) and get verm on them tomorrow.

I didn't leave the my substrate out. I kept them in the jars after I sterilized them. My cakes have been dunked for like 20 hrs now. Will waiting until tomorrow hurt them?

Yes I know that your uncolonized cakes are currently in jars. I'm saying don't do anything with them other than let them colonize.
leaving your cakes till tomorrow is not ideal, but at this point your options are limited. Put them in some fresh water to discourage bacteria growth. You've already dunked for longer than recommended

They don't even have spores in them. They just have substrate

Should I just go ahead and put them in the fc without verm?

Ok so then either inoculate them or throw them away. They aren't useful to you otherwise. Spend the couple bucks and download the let's grow mushroom videos. You'll jump way up on the learning curve.

It's cool man. Like I said, either stick them in the fridge in some fresh water until tomorrow, or throw them in the chamber now and keep your misting up. The surface of the cakes can dry out pretty easily without the verm, so your misting will likely need to be frequent
