Autopsy shows Freddie Gray died of 'high-energy injury'
    #21846962 - 06/23/15 05:55 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

"(Reuters) - The autopsy of the Baltimore black man who died after being hurt while in police custody shows he suffered a "high-energy injury" like those in shallow-water diving accidents, the Baltimore Sun reported on Tuesday.

The spinal injury to Freddie Gray, whose death in April triggered protests and rioting, was most likely caused when the police van in which he was riding suddenly decelerated, the newspaper said. It cited a copy of the autopsy report, which has not been made public.

The state medical examiner's office concluded that Gray's death fit the medical and legal definition of an accident. But it ruled the death to be a homicide because officers failed to follow safety procedures "through acts of omission."

Gray, 25, was arrested on April 12 following a foot chase by officers and suffered a severe spinal injury while in police custody.

His death a week later sparked protests over police brutality and looting and rioting that drew national and international attention to the case.

The State's Attorney's Office charged the six officers involved in Gray's arrest and death. Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., the driver of the van, is accused of second-degree depraved heart murder.

Three other officers are charged with manslaughter and two officers face lesser charges. The trial is set for October, and the officers have pleaded not guilty.

Though Gray was loaded into the van on his belly, the medical examiner surmised that he may have gotten to his feet and was thrown into the wall during an abrupt change in direction, the Sun said.

He was not belted in, but his wrists and ankles were shackled, putting him "at risk for an unsupported fall during acceleration or deceleration of the van," the newspaper said, citing the autopsy report.

The report was completed on April 30, the day before State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced the criminal charges. The deadline for releasing evidence, including the autopsy report, to defense lawyers is Friday.

Mosby said in a statement that her office did not release the report and that she condemned the leaking of information. A spokesman for the state medical examiner declined to comment.

Lawyers for the officers said in a statement that they had not seen the report and did not have a copy."

See if he wouldn't have run from the police he wouldn't have ended up bouncing off the steel walls of the paddywagon. He brought this on himself.

so he was water diving sometime before he was arrested and injured himself and when he had his scuffle in the back of the van he aggravated his diving injury so it was mearly a coincidence that he died, a strange and random set of events

well im glad we at least got to the bottom of it, i bet all those people who over reacted and blamed the police feel stupid now

I didn't read anything about him actually diving. That was just an example of the type of injury he had. I find it really strange that he would get up while shackled in a moving vehicle. I don't know what could have happened because a spinal injury would be a strange thing to happen even from police brutality. Usually it's head trauma or choking.

It's called rough riding:

Quote:

A rough ride is a form of police brutality in which a handcuffed prisoner is placed in a police van without a seatbelt, and is thrown violently about by driving the vehicle erratically.[1][2][3] Other terms for the practice include "nickel ride" (a reference to carnival rides),[4][5] "cowboy ride",[2][6] "joyride",[7] "bringing them up front",[1] and "screen test" (as the prisoner may hit the protective screen behind the driver).[3][8] Rough rides have been implicated in a number of injuries sustained in police custody, including the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Maryland, in April 2015.[1][2][6] Throughout the U.S., police have been accused of using aggressive driving tactics to "rough suspects up", resulting in numerous injuries, and millions of dollars of damages awarded to victims and their families.[4][6]

Baltimore lawyer Phil Federico described the practice as "definitely intentional", saying "they're unbelted, the inside of these wagons are not padded, they can't protect themselves, and they get thrown from one side to the other, usually landing on their head, and fracturing their neck."[2] University of South Carolina professor Geoffrey Alpert, an expert in police use of force, has asserted that the practice was common in the 1980s and 1990s, but has become less so with the increased presence of video recording equipment in police vehicles.[1] There are no reliable records of the frequency of these incidents.[4][6]

it's called anyone who thinks cop's are angel's and don't need to be thoroughly examined in our culture, as opposed to just focusing on street urchins in our culture and only account for them instead of ALL the trouble makers, are simply slow on the upkeep.

if the MEs arent looking ate older injuries they're fucking retards because it
could have played a part. grey standing in a van was his own stupidity because
he surely knew what was coming since koods tells us this is common practice in
baltimore. if these cops are found guilty then I hope they're ass raped with a
cement truck

It will be very difficult to prove that this injury was done intentionally, how does one prove it?  Is negligence a crime in this case?

Well if rough ride has a wiki page it must happen all the time. I still don't see how you could kill someone without crashing or flipping the truck.

Humans are weird like that. We can survive insane amounts of trauma some of the time,  but other times even a punch to the wrong spot will kill us instantly.

They killed Freddie grey without crashing the truck :cookiemonster:

I think he fell and hit the base of his head on a protruding bolt.

maybe he was standing at one end of the van, waited for the van to start putting the breaks on, and he ran to the other end to try and kick the door open to excape jail, only he slipped and used his head instead

The inside of a police van is basically a steel room with a sitting bench.

If your feet and hands are both tied with cuffs, and you don't have a seatbelt on, a person has no ability to secure themselves without moving around, compound that effect if the driver of the van goes from 40 mph to 0 mph in very short order, a person will hit very hard into the steel wall without any protection.

So would I, but I wouldn't want to be the real life example.  I don't think the van driver had any intention of killing a person that day, maybe just a "rough ride".
