rehydrating substrate
    #21846729 - 06/23/15 04:46 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

hi,

i have some 1/2 pint substrate jars (rye grain) that i probably waited too long to use. they appear dehydrated. don't see obvious contams -- they just look dry. my question: can they be reconstituted by adding sterile water? if so, what volume should i add. thanks much.

Are your 1/2 pint spawn jars fully colonized?

You should not be adding sterile water to your jars.  The needed moisture during colonization should come from inside the rye grains themselves.

It might work. I wouldn't do it though. It would be hard to get the water right and you risk contam. Far better to start over. I keep foil on my jars until I use them for this reason.

If you have some old spore syringes, and you're not sure of their viability, you could use these to attempt germination. Just give them an extra heavy squirt.

The foil serves no real purpose outside of the PC.....we only use it during sterilization, so the filter doesn't get wet.

Foil should be removed after sterilization and it should stay off. It will only moisted the filter, making it useless....

I use small squares of sfd that are dry when I remove the foil. YMMV.

For sure, get rid of the foil when you inoculate or transfer.

But the foil doesn't filter anything, nor does it help keep moisture in the jars.....it is pointless after sterilization.

If your grains are drying up, make the GE holes smaller.

A grain jar should have no problem keeping the right moisture content for at least a month.

I use 1/8" holes covered with a siliconed SFD.....my jars have been known to last 5+ weeks....

Best to put the jars to work asap anyway. Think I am going to use 1/8" holes instead of 1/4" on my new jar lids, though. Thanks!
